Croix - family name for a boy.....

My grandmothers maiden name was LaCroix. I understand this probably won't go over well on this board, but I'm still curious what you ladies think of this name for a boy.

  • Is it pronounced Croy? I kind of like it and I always love the idea of using family names in a creative way.

  • I would say Croy is ok. Croix might be confusing. I would see people pronouncing it Cro-ix.....

I'm not a French teacher, but agree with this. I love family names and would probably put it in the middle name spot.

  • I really like it! It would make a nice fn but an excellent mn! I would probably spell it Croy though...just because he will probably want people to be able to pronounce his name. Unless of course, you lived in France or some country that would pronounce it correctly.

  • I like it especially as a mn.  I don't think I would be bold enough to use it as a fn since it would get a lot of side eyes.  I know a family that named their kid Reino (pronounced like Reno, NV).  I thought it was so weird for the longest time especially when the mother said they were thinking of naming a DD Aspen.  They ended up not going with Aspen because they didn't want people to think their kids were named after cities (duh).  Turns out Reino was a family surname for them.

It's a bit out there for a first name, but I do like the idea of using family names. I like it a lot as a middle!

Definitely don't spell it Croy--that's terrible advice Smile

  • A friend of mine named her son Croix, so to me it's not that weird as a fn. I would never spell it Croy, though.

I don't think it really works for a first name.  But I really like it as a middle name - but I think LaCroix as a middle name is even better!

I does remind me of the sparkling water though!

  • I think it is perfectly fine as is. I'm surprised so many people don't like it as a first name. I would keep the spelling the same.

It is not pronounced Croy in French...more like Crwah.

I just want to say if you do go with this name, please don't spell it phonetically.  People will grasp the pronunciation.  Anyone with a background in romance languages will know how to say it and kids pick up on things quickly.

Having no background in romance languages, I was still able to figure it out.

Like all names, spell it correctly or don't use it. Croix for a middle name would be excellent.

  • I also like the idea of Croix for a middle name, or even LaCroix to keep it all together. As a first name, I'm not a fan.

I'm actually surprised at how many people have not encountered this word before.  St. Croix is a popular island and it's a common word in French.

I 100% agree, I am shocked that people are having an issue with the pronunciation.
