She said she'd looked it up and was surprised to see that people thought it was dated. Several people wrote back that it sounded very 80's. Then she said she used it because every Whitney she knew had been popular, someone rolled their eyes at that, and she wrote back "doesn't everyone want their daughter to be popular????"

Haha! That is kind of funny. Strange reason to name a kid Whitney, but it's certainly not a bad name. OP- go for it. Whitney is 100% better than the made up stuff people are coming up with now a days, regardless of your reason.
Where's the original post? I worked with a girl that named her daughter Ashley because that was the name of the most popular girl when she was in high school.......

Whitney is on my long list. H and I both like it. Then again I don't get wrapped up in "dated" as I think someone could argue that for every name. Also, if that's the worst thing wrong with a name I love, so be it.
LOL at the popular part. She's right...we all want our kids to be popular but it's a stupid reason to use it for a name.
Haha that is my name and I was born 1990.....I guess that does kind of make it dated but i'm not that old! lol Although I will say all the Whitney's I've ever come across are my age or older

Hold up.
You were born in 1990? Good grief. Time to reschedule that Botox consult.

NOT EVEN CLOSE. I was one of the "popular kids" at my high school, and I cringe to think back on myself. We were all snotty and downright mean to a lot of kids who were "beneath" us. I got out of the Country Club crap, ditched the white gown and gloves, and started using the rest of my brain. I want my daughter to be intelligent, kind, independent, and ambitious. I don't want her being a "popular kid." I want her to have friends...good, close friends that will last a lifetime. I don't want everyone to want to be her friend because she's the prettiest or has the best car or the best clothes. That sh!t makes you a lame person.

Ugh, I hate that she DD! I responded with a comment in her favor! I hate to rehash But, I thought it was obvious that OP didn't name her DD, Whitney, so she could be popular in the sense of snobby, hateful, and slutty. I thought it was apparent that she may have had similar experiences where popular girls were actually smart and kind girls that people actually wanted to be around.

So were you popular?
That's kind of creepy.
Am I the only one who finds that so sad?
