Lydia - too close to Olivia?

DH and I both like Lydia for Baby Girl (due this Fall.)  I know lots of baby Olivias, though.  Will Lydia get too easily confused with Olivia?  I know I'll get annoyed if I have to repeat "no, not Olivia, Lydia!" every time I introduce her...

No, I don't see how they could be confused.

Other than them ending in 'ia', I have no idea how they could be confused.

  • Unless you and DH have problems with articulation then I don't see how people would confuse Lydia and Olivia.

  • I love Lydia, and it won't get confused for Olivia. I thought were you asking for sibset reasons and in that case I would have said yes that they are too similar to go together. But I say def go for Lydia- it's beautiful!

This. It's too matchy for siblings, but I would never in a million years confuse one name for the other.

  • I would never have thought people would confuse those names.
  • I actually disagree with most people.  I wouldn't have thought of it before this post, but I can see where these two names might sound alike in certain settings.  If you're on the playground, in any crowded area, in a sports arena, etc.  In a quiet setting, I think you're fine.  I can see where it might cause confusion when the name is being called out.

My name is Mary.  I played a lot of sports with a friend of mine named Erin.  Surprisingly, when coaches, teammates and fans called out our names we often didn't know which one they were talking to.

     Just an example.

  • I think you're overthinking it. Lydia is beautiful. I like it WAY more than Olivia.

  • I think you will probably get a few confusions when just speaking introductions but I don't think that is any reason to shy away from it. I'm Whitney and I got both Brittany and Wendy growing up when I spoke my name. Its not that big of a deal. You correct them and if they don't get it right again then just leave it be. lol It was usually a casual elderly person with terrible hearing or a cashier somewhere and it didn't matter if they could pronounce my name right or not lol
  • My sister's name is Olivia and a lot of people drop the O sound when pronouncing it and say Livia and I think that could sound like Lydia, but I wouldn't not use the name Lydia.  It's easy enough to correct.
