True Irish Names

Met a couple today; the wife is native to Ireland.

I loved the names of her three children, not only for the uniqueness (at least here in the US they're unique) & the traditional Irish spellings; I really love the sound of all the the names (and never would have thought of them as I have no Irish blood/background/familiarity with these kinds of traditional Irish names). Her husband isn't Irish, FWIW.

Saoirse ("SEER-sha," meaning freedom)

Orlaith ("OR-la," meaning golden princess)

Cillian ("KILL-ian," meaning little warrior)

Wow, if the mom or a friend is on The Bump, they'll definitely know who I'm typing about!

  • Saoirse is the name of the actress who stars in The Lovely Bones ( a movie I love). I remember looking up her name and thinking it was pretty awesome.

I like Irish names. It is also my husbands heritage (mine is German/English). I love the traditional spellings. although I could never use Cillian as it is too close to the brand of beer (Killians) that my friends and I drank in our college days!

  • those are beautiful names!  My niece (my sister's daughter) is named Mairead (it rhymes with "parade") and is an Irish variant of Margaret.

  • I love Cillian- I see it on here a fair bit (or maybe I just notice it more because it's on my list). I've known three Saoirses (when living in Ireland) and they have all been total brats, and I worked with an Orla who was awful so I've gone sour on those names.

  • Cool names, but just way too hard for the general public to pronounce. I like them but would never use them in the U.S. because I feel that would just be torture on my kid. I think the only traditionally spelled Irish name that most people are familiar with is Siobhan. (Sha-VAHN)

I am a big fan of Irish names and those are lovely girls names.  I just spent three weeks in Ireland and it was so nice to be in a place where EVERYONE can pronounce "Seamus."  That's why my Owen is not an Eoghan...I love that spelling, but it is tough for folks outside of Ireland.

  • I love all three names. Orla (but spelled this way) was in my top three for my daughter. I ultimately went with Nuala (new-la), a family name for us, and it has been perfectly fine pronunciation-wise here in the States, I just need to tell people once and they get it.
  • Beautiful names...  I love all three
  • My friend went VERY Irish in her names too... Twin boys Deaghlan & Taidghe (i can never remember if im spelling it right) and her daughter is Saoirse.
