Food Allergy

Disability or not??

My little man has a food allergy of nuts, wheat, and eggs. Would that be considered a disability??

Re: Disability or not??

  • Food allergies are considered a disability under the ADA (as amended).  That means kids are eligible for 504 plans at public schools and private schools that accept federal funding.

No, as in reasonable accomodations must be made.  Think wheel chair ramps and handicapped bathroom stalls.

  • Ok, because I'm a singe mother in school and I really need some kind of help, at least until I finish school. I can only buy his food from the whole food stores and they are really expensive. Thanks ladies.
  • Some health insurance plans reimburse the cost of  (or a portion thereof) the foods necessary on a gf diet, but you have to have an official diagnosis by a doctor. M

Both of my kids have celiac disease and we are able to have the cost of most foods (breads, limited snacks, flours and some others) that are gf related reimbursed.

Its worth a call to the insurance people.
