Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Crib sleep

My son has been sleeping in the Rock and Play and swing for nightttime sleep since he was three weeks old. (He slept In bassinet and a few times in the crib early on)  For naps, he sleeps in the swing only. I have been anxious about daycare in September since all babies sleep in pack and play, flat and no motion... Not my sons favorite combo.

Well, after his bath and book, I gave him his bottle and rocked him until he was very drowsy and placed him in the Rock and Play. With binky in mouth, he wasn't happy after a few minutes, which was strange. I took him out and rocked him, but still no happiness after I set him back in the Rock and Play. I decided to go in his room and rock him n the rocking chair and see what would happen if I placed him in his crib. I didn't expect much. I mean, besides the fan, there was a lack of loud white noise. His rain sound from the sound machine was missing... As was motion and an incline.

It has been almost two hours and not a peep... Even after his binky fell out! (I have a video monitor). He definitely surprised me, even with this short span, regardless of what happens next... I wish I would have given it a try sooner! In a few weeks, we work on weaning the swaddle at night. Hopefully that won't be too challenging...

Re: Crib sleep

  • Wow, I hope your good fortune lasts! That is awesome.

I actually bought a second Rock N Play for DD at my daycare. That way her transition is as easy as possible. You might think about that if he still wants an incline to sleep on during the day.

    Good luck!

  • Good job!  Sometimes our babies surprise us.  He may even do great at daycare in the pack n play.  That would be great so you won't have to worry about how he is sleeping there.

When my DS first went to daycare he had a hard time sleeping in their crib.  I had already transitioned him to his crib at home for naps and nighttime but it was a new place.  They made the transition easier for him by letting him sleep where he was comfortable like the swing or bouncy chair.  Once he was there a couple weeks they tried harder to have him sleep in his crib.  That worked well because he mostly sleeps in the crib now.

  • You're right, they can surprise us!!  He stayed down until 1 A.M. for a feeding, and then again until almost 5!! He was kinda ready to get out of the crib at 5, unfortunately, so we played downstairs after I fed him, and then he went down for a nap in his swing at 6.

I am going away to Cape Cod for a week in 2 weeks, and want him to nap well so that I can relax in the rental house pool (the whole point of the trip) so I will work on putting him down elsewhere for naps after we get back. No sense in starting something that will be changed anyway. We have the BabyBjorn travel crib for night sleep, but I may try him napping in there if I am just sitting around next to him and don;t mind him fussing while he gets to sleep. The thing is that I swaddle for night sleep, and I don't know if he'll lay flat in a bigger, less cuddly space, without a swaddle during naps. He starts flailing his arms and gets all excited... which doesn't help with him falling asleep. :)

  • I had this same exact luck!! My son would fall asleep in his swing, but for no longer than 30 minutes & he's real fussy at first when I put him in his pack and play. However, when I put him to sleep in his crib for a nap for the first time, he went to sleep very easily and for about 3-4 hours. I was so pleasantly surprised. Now, I put him in his crib for naps & at night when he initially goes to sleep and he's knocked out for 4-5 hours. So, I get pretty good sleep at night. Good for you!
