Cloth Diapering

What do you do with the wipes?

If you are using disposable wipes, do you just throw them away?  Almost all of the baby wipes I've looked at say not to flush.  It's probably only if you have a septic tank, but I'm not completely sure.  Do most of you just use re-usable cloth wipes?

Re: What do you do with the wipes?

  • No, you shouldn't flush disposable wipes.  They are meant to be thrown away as I don't think they're water soluable.  If you want a flushable option, flushable liners are what you're looking for.  Doesn't help the wiping situation though.

I personally use cloth wipes as I can wash them with my cloth diapers no problem.  Even if you don't use cloth diapers, cloth wipes clean better than disposable wipes.  They're also easy to make.  Or you can just use baby washcloths if you don't want to make them or buy special made cloth wipes.  Just squirt plain old water on them when you're ready to use them.

  • We use both, but yes, you should throw away disposable wipes. They do make flush able ones, though, my friend uses them. I don't know what the brand name is, though.

  • Def. don't flush disposable wipes! That would be bad for your system.

We will be cloth wiping too. I have cloth diapered and disposable wiped in teh past and it was a disaster. Too much work.

  • Definitely do NOT flush any baby wipes!

We have a Diaper Genie so all the wipes go in there.

  • Not only should you not flush regular disposable wipes but you shouldn't even flush flushable ones. I went thre one and a half packages of flushable wipes in my last house (sewer not septic) when I was potty training my son, used maybe one wipe a day and we mgot such a bad clog we had to call an emergency plumber in to fix the problem. $500 later he told us that flushable wipes are one of the biggest myths on the market and that we wouldn't believe the number of calls he gets because of them.

  • I started off with disposable wipes, and I would just thrown them away. However, somehow most ended up in our wetbag, and eventually in the wash! I soon realized it was a TON easier to just use cloth wipes because I was constantly having to buy more disposable ones. Cloth wipes do the job better than disposables too... if you are thinking about using cloth diapers, I would definitely use cloth wipes as well.

  • If you're cloth diapering, you should be cloth wiping. It's so much easier. Everything can then go into one basket, as opposed to 2. If you have a lot of extra receiving blankets, you can cut those up into squares and they work as well, or just buy some online, they're pretty inexpensive.

  • An off-shoot of the original question: How do you prep your cloth wipes? Do you just wet them right before using them? Is there a special solution you make and store them in? Just curious as I'm planning to CD and trying to get as much information as possible. Thanks!

  • target has the generic up &up brand of flushable baby wipes. you should not flush the regular ones. I believe most of us use cloth wipes. I use my cloth wipes with just water
  • I use cloth wipes and spritz them with water before using.  Disposable wipes sound like more work to me.

  • You should never flush disposable wipes - they don't break down.

I use a combination of disposable and cloth wipes as I was gifted several boxes of disposables and I don't want them to go to waste.

  • OK, so for the re-usable wipes...do you just leave a stack of dry ones near the changing station with a spray bottle filled with water?  Just spray with water and throw in wet bag when done?  Sounds easy enough.
