Blankets in Crib

I know you are not supposed to put anything in the crib with an infant, and we will not be using bumper pads at all, but I was wondering at what point is it safe, or is it ever safe, to use a blanket/quilt in the crib?  In the beginning we will be using swaddle sacks or sleep sacks and nothing else in the crib at all.  But we have a baby quilt for the crib, and I didn't know when (or if) it would be safe to use it.  Any thoughts?

  • After baby is one year old. Or you can use it now on the floor as a playmat.

  • I started to use an afghan (very open knit) at a year with my first child (I was so nervous), and at 5 months (after we stopped swaddling) with my second child.  With my second he was also wearing fleece jammies and the knitted blanket would stick to his jammies, and never once got over his face.  I would avoid a quilt, because there is no open weave to it.  Use it in a stroller or as a play mat.

  • We didn't use one with DD until she was around 18 months.  We have a few A+A dream blankets, so they are very breathable.
