I thought it was strange too. The only time I ever "checked" up there was to check the strings of my IUD, which was required by my doc. And I thought it would be too high to reach in pregnancy anyway?
I know it's common for women to feel when they are ttc to see if they are fertile. However, I don't think I would know what I was feeling as far as dilation and effacement, if I could even reach it.
The only thing I think is weird is that she wants to check so early. A lot of women do self checks while TTC so they know the position of their uterus. If you know your body well enough you can tell when your uterus is low and high, soft and hard. So I don't think self checks are weird. I wouldn't do them during pregnancy just because of the risk for infection especially because being dilated doesn't tell you anything about when you will go into labor.
I don't think it's that weird, but I don't think I'd be trying to reach up there at this point in my pregnancy...I don't think I could reach, lol! I could understand if you were trying to labor at home for as long as possible before going to the hospital, but even then, I don't hunk I could reach, and I would have no clue what the heck I am feeling for!
I was definitely able to reach my cervix, but I got very used to that while TTC (and monitoring my fertility for a couple years prior). I really just wanted to compare it to my pre pregnancy cervix, since I of course don't know what I'd be feeling for in terms of dilation nor would I want to try to stick my finger in my cervix even though my hands were clean. I was just really curious! It's certainly a lot different than it used to be, but I can't apply too much meaning to that other than I suppose I should expect it to be shorter (and it was).
I have been to the hospital a couple of times with false alarms and they always check with a sterile glove. If you can even "reach up" that far, and unless you have sterile gloves (not the same as the gloves you get in a box at the drugstore), I wouldn't try doing it on your own.
It's a little much for me. I'll admit, I tried it once many years ago when we first started TTC, and I couldn't reach it. Will not be attempting that now. It's painful/uncomfortable enough when my dr. does it - why try and do that myself?
A little strange to me. Like everyone else has said I wouldn't know what to even look for. Also, I know I would be able to reach anything around my belly, and I also know my uterus is tilted back (I think that's what she said) and my OB even has a hard time reaching it for checks. Plus, I agree with the sterile glove thing, I would just be reaching my hand up there, even if it was washed. Too much can be introduced and this is not the time you want any infections.
Re: Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks this is weird...
