Hello fellow mommies,
So my sister named her son Shaun and he is now 8 years old. A few years later I met my husband whose name is also Sean. Now we are having our first baby boy this October (2012) and we want to name him Sean Patrick Jr after his dad of course. I have a feeling my sister will be pissed off about this but I can't help that my husband's name is Sean too. What do you all think??

Re: Naming the baby after his Dad.
Personally, I would not use a name that any of my sibling's used but I also would not name my child ***** Jr.
She has no claim to the name, and if the two of you really want to carry on your husband's name in that form, that is your choice.

It's a boy!
Well at least they would be spelled differently... and she doesn't own the name.
But personally I wouldn't name my child after his father because 1. I strongly dislike a child being called "Junior" 2. Having seen my grandfather and uncle and the whole "Are you looking for Mike Sr. or Jr." deal... it gets pretty annoying and confusing.
I would use your husbands name as a middle, just flip flop them if you like Patrick.
Oh and I know a kid that went by his middle name and it thoroughly embarrassed him in school because on the class lists, year books etc. was his first name and last name only... so it made his life a little rough. So I wouldn't name my son after his dad and call him by his middle name either.
All in all, no to the first name same as hubby
It will get really confusing with 3 Shaun/Seans. My husbands brother and step brother are both Scott, plus there is an uncle on one side and its a pain keeping track in conversation, lots of "my" Scott, "your" Scott, or adding initials, and it doesn't get any better when they are both there. The family's one request with naming of grand kids is that no one use the name Scott!
Perhaps like a couple of other ladies suggested, flip the names so you name him after his father but he also gets his own name?
I wouldn't use the name of my niece or nephew.
Although I have never been a fan of naming a son after his father (why shouldn't the kid get his own name?!).....I would have to say in that situation I REALLY wouldn't name him after his father. My cousin (a year older than me) and I have the same name. It blows always going by Big _____ and Little _____.
Land on my SO's side of the family, they have a grandpa/dad/daughter all with the same name (daughter just has different spelling). Its really frustrating when you just say the first name. You have to say grandpa ___, or dad ___ or little _____
I wouldn't choose the name Sean for a few reasons:
1. Under most circumstances, I wouldn't use my husband's name for a son. I much prefer kids to have their own names.
2. I think it gets really confusing having seniors and juniors and such!
3. I wouldn't name my child the same as my sister's kid. Again, I like my kids to have their own names.
But, that's just me. No one owns a name, so if you have every right to name your child Sean. I do like PP's suggestions of using Patrick Sean instead.
What if you used the name and called him SJ (Sean Jr, like on the Blind Side)?
Thanks everyone for your comments. My husband always envisioned his son being named after him. We are most likely naming our child Sean Patrick. I'm actually bummed that my sister ruined it for us in a way.
