New Here--dealing with Infertility and looking at Adoption

Hi! I'm Melanie--new to The Bump and newly married (Sept 2011). My husband and I recently learned that I'm not ovulating and he's not producing sperm. We're meeting with a specialist in ten days, but we're also investigating adoption. We live in Kentucky and wondered if anyone had experience with the adoption process. We would love to adopt from Kentucky or Ohio. Any information or personal experience would be welcomed. Thanks!

  • Good luck!! The first place I would look is through the state....here is the link:

Another site I found when I was looking was childplace.  It is in Kentucky & Indiana though...not Ohio.  Here is the link:

I didn't get too involved in the process...just researched it after my loss, because 1 in 3 women don't ever get pregnant again after the type of loss I experienced. There are a lot of Christian & Catholic groups that you could check out as well. I wish I could help you more.  This board is slow...so GL! I hope you get good news soon.

  • I thought I would jump on here.  I am so sorry that you and your hubby are having to deal with infertility.  I realize that your DH and you are going to be seeing your specialist in a week and a half. However, I think it is exciting that you are considering adoption as an option!

I know that it can be a bit overwhelming to wade through all the information out there.  So, I wanted to mention a website that might help you out.  I've shared it with other families like yourself while working at Focus on the Family.  The website is called ICareAbout Orphans.org and has a section titled "Considering Adoption."  Focus also has some information on beginning the adoption process on their site.  This is just a FYI -- and I hope this helps!

I will be praying for your husband and you as you look at the next steps to take!

  • Thank you! I have checked out those links and have a call in to the state. We are just trying to gather all of our options together and adoption is something we considered before even learning of the infertility issues. We appreciate the prayers and good thoughts.
  • I'm so sorry to read of the infertility issues that you and your husband are having!  I'm not really familiar with adoption myself, but some close friends of mine here in Kentucky had checked into it previously when they thought they weren't going to be able to have children.  The only thing I wanted to mention is please research the rights of the adopting parents.  When my friends had checked into adoption the thing that really turned them off to it was that it was too easy for the parents of the child to come back and say they want custody of their child back.  That could have changed by now because this was a few years ago, but I would think it's something you could find out pretty easily.  Good luck and hopefully you will be a happy momma and daddy soon!
