gasping for air?

one of my daughters has always randomly made this gasping for air sound. My pediatrician never seemed worried about it. Today out of no where my other daughter who never has done that started randomly doing it. Is this normal? Should I be calling her pediatrician? I dont want to look like that crazy overly paranoid mom calling the on call doctor on the weekend.

Re: gasping for air?

  • Are they choking on their saliva?  Both my girls starting doing that when they started teething.  They would be just hanging out playing and then swallow too much saliva and start choking, gasping for air.  I use the suction bulb to get the excess out.  I noticed they haven't been doing it as much the last couple of weeks by for awhile, it was once a day.

  • My daughter used to o that in her sleep...I asked ped about it, and he was not concerned. It was almost as if she had sleep apnea, would not take it breaths, so when she did, she was gasping. She would stay asleep the whole time too. Maybe not same thing as your daughter, but mine only did it a few times for about a month (around 6 months) and hadn't done it since.
