Baby extra active today? In distress?

I thought babies were supposed to move less towards the end of pregnancy. Am I wrong? My LO has been moving nonstop (and harder movements than usual) for the past few hours... Way more than what's normal for her. I googled increased "fetal movement at 38 weeks" (big mistake) and read a couple stories about women whose babies were really really active because they were in distress and ended up a being stillborn. I'm super paranoid now. I'm considering going to L&D to get monitored. I'm being totally crazy, right? I should be worried about decreased movement, right? What would you do? She's generally a quiet baby. Anyone else experience this?

  • You can always call your doctor (or labor and delivery at your hospital) if you are worried about it and ask what they suggest. I was worried about my baby doing this too and my doctor said that movement is good, not enough movement is when you need to worry.

  • Just trust your gut.  If you feel like something is wrong, no one will fault you for going - regardless if you are right or not.  And since you're really worried about it, you should probably just go anyway to ease your mind or you'll be stressed out until the baby is born!

Agreed, Dr. Google carries a false MD. lol

In all seriousness, I wouldn't stress too much, remember LO is running out of room in there so you are even going to feel the smaller movements this late in the game.

  • I'm glad you asked this!  I convinced myself for a while that extra movement meant my baby was struggling with the umbilical around her neck.  Luckily, my OB is patient with my worry-questions :)

  • Dang I was just thinking recently that I feel her moving a lot more now.

Like PP said, they're getting bigger and running out of room, and have basically fully formed bones so we're going to feel quite a bit more.

My OB asked about normal kick counts still, I'm going with anything that seems wrong call, or little movement. I'm thinking less movement would make me more worried than more at this point.

No movement is what to worry for... someone I know went through having a stillborn :( its a fear of mine as well...so the movements are welcome! I think feeling them is much better than not :)

  • My lo was very active up until the day I had him. I had noticed the day that I went into labor that he was quiet and I was real tired. If you are real worried call the dr, but I wouldn't be to worried it may be something he ate.
