How did you decide?

Going off the restriction theme of this board today and yesterday, how did you ladies decide which restrictions were more important. Example: I didn't swear off caffeine but I tried to stay away from artificial sweeteners. Just curious how you ladies decided.

  • I live by moderation and common sense is key no matter if you are pregnant or not.

  • I think everything in moderation... I try and eat as healthy as I can - does that mean sometimes I eat a piece of cake when I shouldn't HELL YES!

I actually don't try to drink any caffine at all- especially as I get migraines.

  • Same here. Everything in moderation. Despite my GD I dont restrict anything. I havent had any soda purely because caffeine equals loads of sugar.

  • If I'd heard conflicting information on whether or not something was safe, and I wanted to consume/do it, I'd ask my doctor and followed whatever guidelines the practice had adopted.

Yep. Except the hard drugs, I cut those out all together. Stick out tongue

  • I made the mistake of cutting out all caffeine. I started getting very severe headaches, and ended up in the ER twice because of it. I drink an 8oz cup of coffee every day now, and I'll eat chocolate sometimes. (I don't drink any tea, or anything) Still get headaches every day, though.

Everything else, I just have in moderation. I don't worry about catching listeria, or getting botulism. Mostly because I already handle my food so carefully since I'm educated so thoroughly on FoodBorne Illnesses.

  • I stayed away from 'unnatural' things like artificial sweeteners and medications.  Also abstained from alcohol (though I totally don't judge anyone who had a glass here and there).

I was more laid back about all foods and had a regular soda or two per week.

  • I had no alcohol that was easy decision because I don't like anything but hard liqour and that's obviously bad in any amount for LO. A lot of the other things we're not supposed to have are debatable by experts so I just tried to have it in moderation. Had a few hot dogs, some lunch meat (though I heated it first), some caffeine in iced tea. I figure people knew a lot less years ago and still had healthy babies. I tried to be smart, but not kill myself stressing.

  • I decided based on what the effects were. I cut out caffeine because it lowers your iron levels and mine are already borderline. I didn't cut out artificial sweeteners because I didn't see a huge problem with those. I still eat sweets but not too many and if I want some lunch meat I eat it (the first 2 trimesters I heated it because I was worried about what would happen to baby if I got sick). The only thing I really missed was coffee, I don't drink it much but it smelled so good. If I really felt I needed some I drank decaf.
