For those of you that just posted about your birth plan w/ a scheduled c-section, did the nurse follow your request to have the cath inserted after your spinal?
They about killed me putting my cath in before my spinal this last time (for unexpetcted c-sec). I was deep in contractions and it felt like they scraped half my insides out! It was horrible!
I checked with my doc this time around and it will be placed after my spinal. I've had caths before and it was nothing compared to when they put it in while I was in labor.
OMG I never though of the before vs. after!! Now that I think of it they tried putting it in before my emergency c/s while I was still in labor and I think I screamed and they stopped trying. This is definitely going on my list of questions for my next appt
With DS1 they put my cath in before my spinal... Worst pain ever! I made sure this time around they did it after! They should respect your choice unless there was some type of emergency.
Mom to former 30 weeker born early to Pre-E. Now happy, health and growing at home!
Yes, cath after the spinal. The wierd part was that when I went completly numb they had my legs open for the cath (like a frog) so I felt like my legs were that way the whole time. They straightened them out ofcourse, but it felt strange.
With my DS, I had an emergency c/s and requested that they put the cath in after my spinal. (I had miscarried earlier in the year and they had to put a cath in to do the final u/s at the hospital and it was a horrible experience).
We will schedule the c/s this time and my ob already knows not to have the cath put in before the spinal!
My hospital does the cath *after* spinal as a matter of routine practice. I'd be surprised if they wouldn't honor that request.
This. I can't imagine a hospital doing this procedure before the spinal is put in place.
I asked originally because any time I have had a cath it has been BEFORE any anesthesia. I didn't even think to ask for it after, honestly. BUT I will be sure to!
I think it would be a ridiculous disregard for a patient's comfort to put it in before the spinal. Of course hospitals do ridiculous things so I would be sure to ask. I had DD at a great hospital that I felt bent over backwards to make me comfy so they of course did it after the spinal was in, and after checking to make sure I was numb first.
Re: Cath after spinal
I can't see why they would do it before if you asked them to wait until after.

I've had my catheter BEFORE my spinal all 3 times so far, and will have it put in place before this c-section too.
I don't think it's as big a deal as people make it out to be. I don't even request it be done after my spinal because it's not that big a deal.
ETA: OP - I don't think they will deny you the request.

I can understand that it would be more uncomfortable and painful if done during an emergency where you were in full on contractions.
I have had 3 scheduled c-sections and so I wasn't in labor, or having any contractions. It really wasn't bad at all for me.
