Am I the only one.....

who still consumes caffeine? I saw the post below about what people would kill for and I saw a lot of pepsi and other caffeinated beverages listed. I drink a pop every single day. That or a blended coffee. My Dr. is fine with me consuming caffeine and I didn't drink any in the 1st trimester when miscarriage was a greater risk.

It kind of makes me feel guilty that I've been indulging in pop when others haven't....hopefully my baby is healthy...

Re: Am I the only one.....

  • No, I thought it was strange too. I was told no more than 200mg a day. That is like 4 sodas if you really push it (also about 1.5 cups of coffee). I got that crazy once at a friend's graduation party since I wasn't drinking. I stray away from caffeine now because it makes LO crazy and he beats the crap out of my stomach.

  • You are not alone - I drink a cup of coffee every morning without fail.  I don't fault anyone for abstaining from anything, but all the midwives I dealt with last time, and my OB last time/this time, have been a-ok with 1-2 caffeinated beverages daily.

  • You're not alone- I still enjoy my Dr. Pepper. :o)

  • Pop is my weakness. Especially when it's cherry flavored. I gave it up for about a week and a half in June but, since then have had a little everyday.

  • I started getting headaches the end of my 2nd trimester and my doc told me to drink some caffeine. I think as long as it's under 125mg a day it's totally fine. That's what my doc said :-) and I still drink a little coffee every now and then.
  • I only abstained from caffeine because it affected me differently now that I'm pregnant and I get really jittery and shaky, almost ill (and as PP said, Baby goes nuts and I get so sore from his movements).  Same thing with soda--all that sugar makes me spike because I'm hypoglycemic and I feel awful, so it's not worth it.

  • I dont care about the caffeine it's about the amount of sugar in the drinks I want. Like in my root beer. It has about 50-some grams of sugar.
I drank soda with my daughter and no issues with her. So dont think you will harm.

  • It's soda... ;). My OB actually recommended I drink caffeine each day because my blood pressure runs so low. I'm dizzy, passing out in the morning if I don't get it up quickly. It's much tastier than medication and had worked well :) I usually just have 1 cup of coffee in the morning and a chocolate treat later in the day. Sometimes I'll get a Coke or iced tea if I go out to eat.

  • After coffee being repulsive to me for so long, I started up again a few months ago. I usually have at least a 1/2 caffeinated coffee or a soda of some sort. I try not to do both, but some days it just happens. Granted this is nothing compared to what I drank pre-pregnancy but it does help keep the headaches away (mostly).

So you are definitely not alone :)

  • I'm not a big caffeine drinker normally, but I haven't really abstained at all during this pregnancy.  I'll have the occasional pop or coffee when I want it--just like I do when I'm not pregnant.  I agree with the PP that caffeine is the only thing that touches a headache for me when I'm pregnant!
  • No, you're not the only one. :)  I still consume some caffeine, though I've been wanting it less and less, and instead crave water with lots of ice.

  • I have coffee daily. I don't think it's a big deal so long as you keep it under the recommended limit.

  • Your baby will be just fine! Lol! I was a big coffee person before I got pg. I cut back a few months before concieving and couldn't stomach any caffeinated/hot beverages in my first trimester. Now, caffeine makes me shakey....but I'll still have sips of pop here and there. I've read a cup of coffee daily is just fine!

    It's soda... ;).

Isnt it funny how people living in different regions of the world talk so differently? Some say pop and some say soda. I think both of those sound strange because around where I'm from we call all types of "soda" cokes. Example: "hey what types of coke do y'all have?"

  • My doctor was fine with me limiting my caffeine and not cutting it out entirely. Actually, I had really horrible migraines at first and doc said caffeine would help and since I was hesitant to even take Tylenol, I opted for that. I drink one cup of caffeine a day, either pop, tea, or coffee. If I'm craving pop and have had my limit for the day, I drink diet caffeine free pop. (But,  I also don't freak about lunch meat either and I've seen a few sandwiches in siggies too) :)

  • I was never really addicted to caffeine before I got pregnant so I figured I would definitely cut down a lot. I still have soda once in a while but order my coffee decaf now and don't even notice the difference.

  • I gave it up in first tri (had previous first tri losses) and worked it back in after that.

  • I just made myself an iced coffee... With my DF gone, a toddler to chase while being uber pregnant and not getting any sleep its the only way I can function.

I've never been a big coffee or pop person

This is me too- however I crave caffine this pregnancy!  so odd- I normally am not a caffine drinker or pop drinker.

  • My midwives actually recommended no caffeine, but after my own research, I decided I decided I was ok with it, although I cut way back and really try to pay attention to how much I'm drinking/eating.  Generally I'll have one caffeinated beverage a day, and if I want chocolate, I'll have that maybe once during the day too.  Usually it's tea in the morning, but if I've been constipated, a cup of coffee is very helpful :). If I know I'm going out, I might skip it in the am and have a coke later.

One day I didn't pay attention.   I had a morning tea, later I had a mocha chip frappuchino from Starbucks, and then I had a Mexi Coke with dinner.  Halfway through my mexi coke I thought my heart was going to explode...I definately won't make that mistake again!

  • I drink one every now and then... maybe one a week. But that's just because I'm not a big soda drinker. Some people are just super "rule" sticklers - your baby will be fine!!

I love regional differences :) I'm originally from the Midwest where we say soda. One side of the family is southern and they all say "coke" while the other side is northern and say "pop."  I'm more inclined to call it all "coke" over "pop."

I posted about a big coke in that thread. I can't have it because of GD. I will drink caffeine. Can't say why the other women aren't drinking pop but for me it's all about the sugar not the caffeine.

I didn't even think about the GD thing with all the sugar, that definitely makes sense.

  • I still drink coffee a few times a week. I gave it up completely in 1st tri, but by 2nd tri I was having a couple cups a month, maybe 1-2 every other week, and now I'm back up to maybe 2-3 a week. I've replaced what used to be my morning coffee though now with Earth Mama Organic Third Trimester tea, it's red raspberry leaf and some other herbs and decaf. I can't wait to go back to my daily k-cup or 2 every morning though.

  • The only thing I have craved this pregnancy is dr. Pepper. I held off during 1st tri, but I have to have at least one a day haha!!

I have tea or coffee everyday.
  • I've cut back...no coffee in the morning but I still have iced tea some days and always have my can of diet dr pepper. If I don't drink caffeine I get a massive headache.

  • My caffeine is in chocolate form.  I don't drink coffee anyway, so that isn't something I miss and I haven't had a pop since I was 12 years old with the exception of the occasional 4 sips of root beer ( I can't handle more than 4 sips, too sweet).

  • I haven't cut anything out.  I wasn't one to drink a lot of caffeine anyways, so I still have a coffee or pop whenever I feel like it, which might be a daily to a few times a week.  I believe anything in moderation!

  • I drink soda every single day. I only had it about 3 times a week during first tri, then I got over that and went back to normal.

  • I drink a half caff/decaf iced coffee and small amount of diet or regular coke, not every day but most. I gave it up for 1st tri but had horrible headaches so around 16 weeks I added a little back into my routine. I stay under the recommended limit and my OB suggests caffeine vs medicine for headaches.

Last pregnancy I didn't drink any but this time is completely different.
