How to spell Colin/Collin

Which would you pick? I know Colin is the traditional spelling, but I've seen Collin used too. Does anyone think Colin pronounced like Colin Powell when they see the 1 l spelling? I'd like to avoid that.

Re: How to spell Colin/Collin

  • I would use Colin. If I saw Colon I'd pronounce it like Colin Powell's name but my first instinct would be to pronounce it Coll-in.

  • I like them equally. If you have a difficult last name I would go with Colin just because it is the most common spelling.

  • My nephew is Collin. The only other Collin I know spells it with two ll's as well. When I see Colin I want to pronounce it like Colin Powell.

  • Collin & Colin are pronounced the same.  Mr. Powell doesn't know whats going on...lol  That being said, I prefer Colin.

  • Thanks! My husband prefers Colin, too, so that will probably be the way we go.

  • I would choose Collin just to distance it further from colon.

  • I like Collin the best. The spelling Colin makes me want to say it Colon even though I know that's not right. So I think you're right to avoid that spelling.

  • I would spell it Colin because Collin just looks funny. Also, I may be wrong but I don't think anyone would pronounce it like Colon! It's a fairly straightforward and well-known name.
  • I much prefer Collin!

See, I think it looks really bizarre spelled Colin. Perhaps that's because the only Collins I know spell it Collin. With two Ls, there is no mispronouncing it (especially because there IS Colin Powell, and he DOES pronounce it "wrong").

I like the traditional spelling, Colin.

Ditto. I think of Collin as an Americanized version, and I agree that it looks funny. I also know someone who named her son Collin and had major regrets about spelling it "wrong."

  • I prefer Colin. I think Colin Powell is the exception to the prononcuation- I've never heard of another person who spells and pronounces the name the same way as he does.
