Backstory...At a 5 weeks, I began having some pain in my lower left abdomen. I thought it was cysts (we used clomid and IUI) because I usually get them from clomid. The pain was off and on. Then for two days in a row it was constant. Not bad enough to be doubled over in pain, but I was beginning to think it could be ectopic. It was Saturday and so I told my husband I wanted to go to the ER because something was up. So in we went.
They took an ultrasound and when they FINALLY got back to me an hour later with the results, they said that they believed it was an ectopic pregnancy because my left tube looked inflamed. They also saw an empty sac.
They called in my OB who agreed that it was ectopic and was scheduling me for surgery in the next hour. She wanted to do a D&C because she thought there was no way that anything would form in the empty sac. Then she changed her mind which was a good thing because I was going to tell her not to touch the sac in my uterus and if a miscarriage was inevitable I was going to find out for myself.
So it was a twin pregnancy. I guess they call it a Heterotopic pregnancy.
So they made me wait two weeks before my next ultrasound. Meanwhile I had all the pregnancy symptoms. Tired and really nauseated. But I knew you could still experience that with a blighted ovum which I was beginning to think I had. So we went in and I met with the ultrasound tech who kind of asked me what I was expecting to see. (I think she was feeling me out to figure out how to tell me when she discovered no baby) I told her that we were in to see if there was a baby or if the empty sac was just a blighted ovum.
She did a vaginal ultrasound and immediately I saw the image on the screen and I said, "That's a baby" She agreed and was completely shocked. She had expained before that she thought we were going to be seeing a pseudo sac which is normally a fluid filled sac that accompanies an ectopic pregnancy.
She probably said the words remarkable about 3-4 times. Everything looked great, right size and heart rate of 165. We then saw the nurse who mentioned that she had us down as a follow up miscarriage. My doctor was also amazed. She thought for sure I would miscarry and said this is very rare.
So now I am about 9 weeks pregnant and so far so good. Sorry this was so long. i just wanted to update those who gave me hope when I had lots of questions.
Re: Update to ectopic twin pregnancy (LONG)
They removed it laparoscopic and they also removed my left tube. I just had three small incisions.

She said they saw an inflamed tube and an empty sac. Sometimes with ectopic you will get a sac in the uterus, so I'm sure they just figured that's what it was because heterozygous pregnancies are SUPER rare. Then there was development in her later ultrasound. Makes sense to me. When I was 5 weeks they did an u/s cuz I was so high risk for ectopic and all they saw was a small sac. They set me up for a u/s 2 weeks later(although I insisted on one about 1 week later). It's normal procedure because you don't see much so early.
Congrats OP on the pregnancy. So sorry you lost the one little one with the ectopic.
All of this! A bittersweet story for sure, but one that I hope continues to have a happy ending.
Just goes to show that you have to advocate for yourself and your children! Sometimes doctors DON'T know best!!
Congratulations!!
