Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Pacifiers

My 10 month loves his paci! I have limited use to only during car rides, and sleep times. I don't mind him using the paci to get to sleep, however, he is now throwing his paci's out of the crib as soon as I lay him down. I live in a two story home, and he is on the lower story. I put him down with 5 or 6 paci's and within 5 minutes I am having to go downstairs to give them back to him. I do this 2 or 3 times per nap (we don't have much of a problem with this for bedtime). Should I take this as a sign that he may be ready for weaning from a paci? I hate to let him sit in there and cry, when I know all he needs/wants is his paci, but I really want to break the habit of him throwing them out of his crib.

Re: Pacifiers

  • I would try a paci clip, clip one to his shirt when you lay him down.. Then you can throw the rest of them in the crib if you want, but this way you know he'll have at least one he can't throw out.

  • Thank you, that's a good idea. I use them in the car, but he pulls them off so I never thought of doing it in bed. But I will definitely give it a try!

    Thanks again,

  • We took DS at 7.5 months and he fussed a little for it at nap/bedtime for a few days and then forgot about it completely.  If it were me, I would take it.  I think it's easier to take it the younger they are.

I'd worry about the risk of strangulation.  SMALL risk, of course, but not worth it IMO.

Dear God, Since I couldn't hold my little one in my lap and tell him about you, could you hold him in your lap and tell him about me?

    PgAL and PAL always welcome...
  • You are all right in regards to the paci clip, I have yet to give it a try as I was concerned of the same thing. Plus, he knows how to remove them :(

Since the post, I have been giving him his paci's when I put him down and then not again until the next nap. So far, he's taken zero naps :( as he cries as soon as the paci's are gone. Apparently my son is more stubborn then I thought. Yesterday was our first full day, so maybe today will be better ...

  • This is exactly how we work on my house! I put DD down with one in her mouth, and on in her crib, usually the one that was in her mouth will end up in the floor, and the other in her mouth, or close by. But two is my limit, and I don't dare go in her room when she's trying to fall asleep or just fell asleep, she goes nuts and wants out. <br>

DS only uses them for sleep too.  If he throws them all out of the crib, he's SOL.  If we go in and get them, he just gets more upset.  If we let him be, he fusses for 5 minutes and then goes to sleep.
