Baby Names

"O" names.

Our last name begins with an "O" and my DH really likes the names Oliver and Owen for boys. I like them both but I am wondering if it would be weird to have a double "O" name. When I said that to my husband all he had to say was, "Then he could be 007!". Silly husband, lol. What do you guys think?

Re: "O" names.

  • I think it depends on the name combo. Our last name starts with a B and we agree that every B name sounds weird with it, but I don't know if it's like that for everyone.

My last name starts with a T and I feel the same way about most T names with it.  There are definitely times it works.  Actually both of my parents' first names start with M and so does their last name.  So, I guess it depends on the name.

With Owen and Oliver I think it depends on the sound of the O in your last name. Since Owen has a long O sound I wouldn't match it with a last name that also has a long O, like Olsen. Owen Olson sounds awful. But Oliver Olsen sounds fine, since Oliver has a short O sound.

I hope that makes sense. I think the initials OO are fine, just make sure the two names don't sound silly together.

I agree with this posters' general point, except that I don't think Olsen is a long O sound. A last name with a long O would be something like O'Neil or Ochoa. So Owen O'Neil would be a name to avoid, for example.

  • Both names are very nice, but each name depend on it's sound. A long sound of a name is not good with the same alphabet of other name.
  • As long as its not rhymey i think its fine. My initals are bmb, and ive never had a problem. (other than my aunts giving me the extra middle name 'oops' because im clumbsy and then calling me the bomb, but it's in good fun!)
  • As long as it does not rhyme and it's not something like Owen Owens, I think it's fine.  GL
