Pre-School and Daycare

Pre-K

DS starts pre-k late August, he turns four next week. This will be in a public school, all day...basically it is like kinder. I know the curriculum they are teaching and it is tough. He will be with two other kids he knows VERY well, as in---he has been in his small in-home daycare with these kids since he was a newborn. They fight like brothers and sisters, which is fine for us--but won't be in the school setting.

I'm so nervous with all of this-I'm nervous about packing lunches, him minding his teacher...I'm nervous about it all.

Anyone else feel this way?

Re: Pre-K

  • All day for Preschool is a lot for that age IMO. Is there a reason you chose an all day preschool? I don't know of any Preschools in my area that go that long unless it's day care.

  • It will be a lot for him, but he needs it since he is already behind because he couldn't hear for the first few years. He is excited about it, but there will be homework and all sorts of stuff that will be added.

The private schools around here that do 1/2 days do not offer the speech therapy he would need, and I'm a teacher at the public school so I know the program is more rigorous than many others.

  • My DD started preschool at 2.5 years old. She is there for 10 hours a day while I work, three days a week. She loves it, absolutely thrives there. All day preschool isn't "too much" for kids. It's good for them to have time with other kids, adults, and go on field trips. They keep the kids happy, fed, entertained, and they're constantly learning. The stuff she comes home with is amazing.

Don't stress too much about it.

  • I think if the program has great teachers, it won't make a difference that he knows these kids well and they act like siblings.  Teachers have a way of dealing with that stuff plus kids act different in school than in other settings.    The PreK class will be very different than the in-home daycare setting.  My older DD did an amazing PreK class 2x (we held her back after the first year due to her ADHD and speech issues, she was just not ready) and she always did great.  My younger DD starts the same program this fall and is so excited.  The PreK class really gets the kids ready for kindy but also still lets them be kids - while they learn a ton, they still have a good amount of play time either outside, in the gym or at the stations in the classroom.  I have found the program to be so great.  It is also a full day, 5 days a week program and my kids did great in it - granted they have been at daycare the same hours since they were infants so not that much different to them.  Food is provided in the program but I will be dealing with lunches for my older DD as she starts kindy this year, getting a taste of it right now for her day camp.  We have just adjusted our bedtime to routine to include making lunch.

  • DD started all day preschool last fall. We were worried because she would be there with her cousin, and they fight more like brother/sister. Turns out it wasn't a problem at all!  DD became very protective of her cousin and made sure everyone was nice to him (according to her teachers). They never fight there, but they still fight like crazy as soon as they are picked up. It's funny how different kids behave at school!

We do Montessori, so our kids do/will do 8-3, 5 days a week at 4. Our son loved it- he honestly would've been ready for full days at 3.5yo. Kindergarten is full days here, so it's truly a good introduction to that schedule.

We do not do (and are quite opposed to) homework in preschool and K, though.

Good to know, the homework is just practicing his sight words and flash cards!

  • My son's preschool is all day (he only goes 2 days) and it's awesome.  It's not way too long for their age and they have a lot of time to fit in lots of play (it's got a farm, water play), crafts, stories and learning.  I can't imagine now him only being in school 3 hours a day.

While ds is only in 2 days a week, he could easily handle 5 days a week.  Your ds will adjust quickly and will love it.
