Unusual family name?

My husband is of Finnish descent.  His great, great, great (not sure how many greats) grandmother was named Impi (I assume it's pronounced Imp-ee).  When we got married he inherited her wedding ring (plain gold band) and wears it as his own.  It is inscribed with her name and has a special sentimental value to his family and to both of us.

We just found out we are having a girl and I kind of think Impi is cute and quirky, but definitely unusual.

If we use it we would pair with a traditional mn like Elizabeth.  I guess if she totally hated it she could go by her mn.

What do you all think?  Fun and different or too unusual?

  • I love it!

I love the family connection, the inscribed ring and Elisabeth as a MN for it. It's a very special name.

  • I hate to say it, b/c I love the association, but my gut reaction is you're either calling her an Imp or gimpy, neither of which is nice & both will get her tortured in school. Is there any way to use a different version of the traditional name or GGGGma's middle name?

  • I would use it as a MN if anything. It's too close to imp, which means mischievous and devilish child.

Gimpy is the first thing I thought of, too.

This is my thought too. Elizabeth Impi Lastname. I think Impi would be very difficult for a child who wasn't growing up in Finland.

  • I love the sentiment.  Unfortunately, I immediately thought Wimpy Impi, Gimpy Impi and - heaven forbid in her teenage years - Pimply Impi.  Having an unusual name will automatically draw attention to her and mean kids may make it negative attention.  I think it would make a great middle name and can be her nickname with your family.

  • I think it would make a great mn but I just don't think it would be well received in the FN position. I think of Gimp and Nymph. I'm sorry.

This!  Though I love the family connection and especially that the name is on the ring, I would use it as a mn.

  • I like it and would support using it as a FN.  One of my BFF's family is Finnish and they had a family friend named Lempi, which is similar.

Sorry , thought the same thing
  • That's a tough one given the meaning behind it.  But I have to go with PP's - the name is way too close to Gimpy, which will open the door to endless teasing :(

This. Unfortunately, I don't think it's a name that translates into English very well, and I think it's likely that she will be teased. It also looks like an incomplete name to me, and doesn't seem like a good professional name. I wouldn't be surprised if she went by Elizabeth when she got older. I would definitely stick it in the MN spot.

  • I would keep it as a MN and use as a nn   Impi as a first name is way too odd for my taste and not pretty at all.   Imp, Gimp, wimp  all come to mind when I hear it so not good first associations...
