Cloth Diapering

Cloth wipe question

I bought 3 yards of pink patterned flannel today to make cloth wipes. I'd like to wash them with my cloth diapers when LO  arrives but I'm not sure-does flannel bleed? Should I boil the flannel first to pre-shrink it and make sure it doesn't bleed? Does flannel shrink? Thanks guys!

Re: Cloth wipe question

  • I just washed and dried my flannel before I sewed my wipes. I did not have any problems with it bleeding or shrinking. However, I did have lots of threads. I made some for a friend's baby shower. I sewed them first, washed & dried, and then ironed to make them flat again. It worked well that way too!
  • I don't think it bleeds. I washed/dried mine before I sewed it together just to make sure it wouldn't shrink- and to get all the dust/junk from the factory out of it.

You don't have to iron them every time tho right?

  • I mean they're not going to stay perfectly flat, but totally usable. I'm assuming she just ironed them again because she was giving them as a gift. :)

  • Flannel does shrink as it is 100% cotton. I would wash and dry it first to preshrink it.

  • Yep, flannel shrinks a TON (more than a cotton quilting fabric).  Definitely wash it before you make the wipes.  I have red, orange, and pink flannel wipes and they don't bleed at all.  They DO leave lint in the aplix of diapers, and lint seems to build up in the pockets of my Freetimes (weird), but it doesn't hurt anything.

  • I do have some red patterned flannel wipes that bled at first. My mom made them for us, and she washed the fabric first. Still, the first couple times I used them I could see red in the water as I wet them in the sink. So I washed them with dark clothing ortowels a couple times before I started throwing them in with diapers.
