A couple of months ago, I thought I "discovered" Jack, and promptly fell in love with it, only to discover the Jack, Jackson, Jaxon...craze. I can't get over the popularity being a turn-off to me and I think I'm going to have to veto the name.
Which makes me curious- what name(s) would you LOVE to use but won't because you just can't get past its popularity?
(I'm talking to people who are bothered by popularity- I know that plenty aren't).
Re: Which names have you vetoed due to popularity?
Grace, Charlotte, Samantha and in my circle: Rebekah.
Boys I don't feel as strongly about. William will still most likely be used if we have another boy. Well, maybe I should rephrase that. DH wants to use it, will not even entertain any other name. So I've made my peace with the popularity, and there are a lot of nicknames for it. Liam is the one that's trending right now and we won't be using that one, so maybe that will help. I also know Williams in all different ages.
Olivia and Avery for girls
Landon and Liam for boys.
So sad. :-(
Lily
Isabel
Emma
Olivia
Sophia
I'm actually really glad that I didn't end up using any of them even though they are lovely names.
I grew up with an extremely popular name in the 80's (Jennifer) and I had always said I didn't want my kid to be one of 5 in a class.
Boys:
Liam
William
Girls:
Molly
The only name that we vetoed purely because of popularity was Lily. There are other extremely popular names that I really like but never really considered, because a) would DEFINITELY veto them for popularity purposes, and b) I like them less than I would if they weren't so popular because I hear them all the time, so they're no longer fresh. Emma is the best example of this. I LOVE Emma. If only it weren't so incredibly popular!
Since we only have a girl, I've never gotten very far in considering boy names, but popularity weighs much less heavily on me for boys than for girls, though. But I probably would avoid names like Liam (a great name that I hear CONSTANTLY among young kids & babies) which were formerly relatively rare but are very popular now. I also love Henry but would probably nix it-- too many people in my social circle using that one.
Lily. Ever since I have been TTC, she would have been Lily Jean. However, we couldn't do that to our child, so we came up with something else, but I like it better!
Elizabeth.
I know this name is classic popular, rather than trendy popular, but it still bothers me.

Avery, Liam, Aidan, Charlotte, Lily, Grace.
Ooh, this is fun!
My kids are older, though, so the names that were on my "way too popular" list will have faded somewhat by now.
I would never have named my DD: Kaitlyn, Abigail/Abby, or Hannah.
When DS was born, I could not have gone with: Ethan, Connor/Colin, or Ryan.
I also really disliked the whole "Aiden/Jayden/Caden/Brayden/Hayden" thing.
Jackson, for me. I've loved that name since the first time I saw Steel Magnolia's in the early 90's. As much as I love it, I just cant use it. I know about 6 little Jacksons/Jaxons.
For a girl, I love the names Lily and Emily. I know too many of them.

I'm with everyone else and really love Lily, but I might consider it as a nn.
DH and I loved Logan but I felt it was really too popular when DS was born. It's still on the table but I don't know.
My grandma's mn was Lillian and I wanted to honor her by naming our future DD Lillian. But I just knew she would be called Lily and I don't like how it's become so popular, so it's been moved to the mn spot.
I also used to love Aiden. But having worked in a daycare with 4 Aidens in one classroom, I realized it was way too popular for my taste. So it got vetoed. DH's also leaning towards Liam is this LO is a boy, but I might end up vetoing that one, too.
Well there is a huge difference between classic-popular and trendy-popular. Example: Jack = classic-popular. Jackson/Jaxon = trendy popular
I could never use a trendy name. I try to think of it this way - If someone 20-30 years from now will be able to see my child's name on a resume/application/whatever and immediately peg which decade they were born - the name is out.
Proud Mama to cleft cutie
Aidan, Michael, probably Henry and Lucy.
We have a top 10 LN so it is a big concern for us.
Girls: Emma, Ava, Emily, Abigail, Ella, Lily, Grace, Evelyn, Hannah, Taylor
Boys: William/Liam, Ethan, Aidan, Daniel
Sooo many names I love are in the top 50...I'd like to stay out of it as much as I can! I also teach preschool so there are quite a few names that I've vetoed due to association

I see people saying that Landon is popular only on TB. I have a 2 year old Landon and have never met one IRL before!
I know a lot of these: Sophie, Sophia, Ava, Emma, Riley, Olivia, Ryan
DD is Lily. It's a name I've loved since I was a little girl. I thought it was a magical name and used to pretend I was named Lily or my dolls were named Lily. It resonated with us and stuck. Luckily there aren't many Lily's around where I live!
Madeline & Zoe
John & Michael became favorite middle names instead of FN options.
Sadly Liam. My dad's name is William and I just about died when I found out that Liam was a NN or a derivative of William. He has always wanted a grandchild names after him...and none of my sisters/brother could see their way to naming one of their 11 children after him - not even a MN!!!
After we had DD I quickly learned how popular Liam is now and I just don't want my LO to have the same name as 6 other kids in his class.
Boys
Henry, Jack, Landon, Aiden, Ethan, Jacob, Caleb, William, Alexander, Carter, Connor,
Girls
Eleanor, Addison, Charlotte, Lily, Sophie/a, Isabel, Grace, Emily, Emma, Abigail, Ava,
Last pregnancy: Sophia. We both really liked the sound and the meaning; it's actually been a favorite of my husband's for a while. But we just couldn't get past the popularity.
This pregnancy: Isabel. Which, granted, isn't as popular as Isabella, but it's too close for comfort.
With both names (besides the popularity), we also faced the potential drama of "name-stealing." That made them even less appealing.
