Baby Names

Which names have you vetoed due to popularity?

A couple of months ago, I thought I "discovered" Jack, and promptly fell in love with it, only to discover the Jack, Jackson, Jaxon...craze. I can't get over the popularity being a turn-off to me and I think I'm going to have to veto the name.

Which makes me curious- what name(s) would you LOVE to use but won't because you just can't get past its popularity?

(I'm talking to people who are bothered by popularity- I know that plenty aren't).

DH and I are Americans living an adventure in Kenya since 2011

Re: Which names have you vetoed due to popularity?

  • Grace, Charlotte, Samantha and in my circle:  Rebekah.

Boys I don't feel as strongly about.  William will still most likely be used if we have another boy.  Well, maybe I should rephrase that.  DH wants to use it, will not even entertain any other name.  So I've made my peace with the popularity, and there are a lot of nicknames for it.  Liam is the one that's trending right now and we won't be using that one, so maybe that will help.  I also know Williams in all different ages.

    Sophia

I'm actually really glad that I didn't end up using any of them even though they are lovely names.

I grew up with an extremely popular name in the 80's (Jennifer) and I had always said I didn't want my kid to be one of 5 in a class.

  • Olivia, Charlotte, Owen and Landon have all lost their appeal due to popularity for me.
  • For girls, Grace and Ella and any version of Nora.  I vetoed Landon for my son because of its rise in popularity, but it was the ONLY name both me and my husband could agree on, so I caved and it's what we ended up with. I love it but it still irritates me that it's getting so popular.

You're gonna love this - I vetoed Jackson - only to then name my son Jackson!  Short version, I wanted to name DS after our fathers (my dad's name is "just" Jack), but DH didn't like Jack being DS' first name (he considers it a nn and also too short with our last name) so he suggested Jackson.  I immediately poo poo'd it as being too popular and trendy, and then a couple days later it hit me that it really was the perfect name that allowed me call DS Jack if I wanted to and gave my husband a name that he liked too.  DS goes by Jack or Jackson and I couldn't imagine him with any other name.

  • The only name that we vetoed purely because of popularity was Lily. There are other extremely popular names that I really like but never really considered, because a) would DEFINITELY veto them for popularity purposes, and b) I like them less than I would if they weren't so popular because I hear them all the time, so they're no longer fresh.  Emma is the best example of this. I LOVE Emma. If only it weren't so incredibly popular!

Since we only have a girl, I've never gotten very far in considering boy names, but popularity weighs much less heavily on me for boys than for girls, though. But I probably would avoid names like Liam (a great name that I hear CONSTANTLY among young kids & babies) which were formerly relatively rare but are very popular now. I also love Henry but would probably nix it-- too many people in my social circle using that one.

  • Jack, Sam, Landon, Ava, Olivia. All nice names, but I just know too many kids with them already :( I really loved all of them at one point too.
  • I don't care about popularity.........see siggy ;)

  • Lily. Ever since I have been TTC, she would have been Lily Jean. However, we couldn't do that to our child, so we came up with something else, but I like it better!

  • Elizabeth.

I know this name is classic popular, rather than trendy popular, but it still bothers me.

  • I usually don't care about popularity of a name. But for some reason I can't get over how popular Asher and Mila are getting.
  • Ooh, this is fun!

My kids are older, though, so the names that were on my "way too popular" list will have faded somewhat by now.

I would never have named my DD: Kaitlyn, Abigail/Abby, or Hannah.

When DS was born, I could not have gone with: Ethan, Connor/Colin, or Ryan.

I also really disliked the whole "Aiden/Jayden/Caden/Brayden/Hayden" thing.

  • Jackson, for me.   I've loved that name since the first time I saw Steel Magnolia's in the early 90's.   As much as I love it, I just cant use it.  I know about 6 little Jacksons/Jaxons.

For a girl, I love the names Lily and Emily.  I know too many of them.

  • Sophia and Aiden.  DH would've vetoed Aiden anyway, though.  Sophia was a favorite middle name.
    DS born 12/2012
    Little Squeaker due 6/2015
  • Lillian.  It was DH's great grandmother's name and goes beautifully (imo) with our other kids' names, but I just couldn't stomach the popularity.

  • I'm with everyone else and really love Lily, but I might consider it as a nn.

DH and I loved Logan but I felt it was really too popular when DS was born.  It's still on the table but I don't know.

  • My grandma's mn was Lillian and I wanted to honor her by naming our future DD Lillian. But I just knew she would be called Lily and I don't like how it's become so popular, so it's been moved to the mn spot.

I also used to love Aiden. But having worked in a daycare with 4 Aidens in one classroom, I realized it was way too popular for my taste. So it got vetoed. DH's also leaning towards Liam is this LO is a boy, but I might end up vetoing that one, too.

  • For a DD: Emma and Abigail. For a DS: I really love John nn Jack, but I'm very concerned about the strong popularity. I'm not ready to turn the name away like I easily did with Emma and Abigail so if a DS ever happens I will probably revisit it.

  • Well there is a huge difference between classic-popular and trendy-popular. Example: Jack = classic-popular. Jackson/Jaxon = trendy popular

I could never use a trendy name. I try to think of it this way - If someone 20-30 years from now will be able to see my child's name on a resume/application/whatever and immediately peg which decade they were born - the name is out.

Emma...I can see why it's so popular. It's adorable and ages well. DS name is popular right now but we learned that after we chose it and it's not nearly as popular as Emma.

DD is Lily. It's a name I've loved since I was a little girl. I thought it was a magical name and used to pretend I was named Lily or my dolls were named Lily. It resonated with us and stuck. Luckily there aren't many Lily's around where I live!

I have loved the name Aidan for years but would never consider it now because not only is it a popular name the whole "ayden" craze has taken over!

  • Sadly Liam.  My dad's name is William and I just about died when I found out that Liam was a NN or a derivative of William.  He has always wanted a grandchild names after him...and none of my sisters/brother could see their way to naming one of their 11 children after him - not even a MN!!!

After we had DD I quickly learned how popular Liam is now and I just don't want my LO to have the same name as 6 other kids in his class.

  • Last pregnancy: Sophia. We both really liked the sound and the meaning; it's actually been a favorite of my husband's for a while. But we just couldn't get past the popularity.

This pregnancy: Isabel. Which, granted, isn't as popular as Isabella, but it's too close for comfort.

With both names (besides the popularity), we also faced the potential drama of "name-stealing." That made them even less appealing.

  • I love love love the name Mason, but I didn't realize how popular it is. I don't know if it will make me veto it. I'm not too hung up on popularity or celebrity use. What does give me pause it finding out a distant friend used a certain name. There are a few names I've loved that have been on my list for a while like Jacob and Catherine, and I found out a friend has actually used both now. I feel like it would be really weird if I used them too. So that's the only thing I really think about when trying to choose a name. Other than vetoing due to nicknames I want to avoid.
