Quick MFM visit question

I have my first MFM visit next Friday. and when I asked my OB's nurse whethere they'd measure my cervix, she said, "Maybe...not sure!"

Do they do this as a rule, or is this something I should request if they don't? I'm not sure where the concern lies, but I don't want to leave anything out.

Re: Quick MFM visit question

  • I recently switched to a high risk doctor becuase my OB who I loved but did not deliver at a hospital with a NICU.  I had my first visit last week with the new doc.  I am 17wks and they told me that at 14-28 weeks they do an ultra sound to check cervical length weekly.

  • My MFM checks my cervix during the regular sono but if it seems that it might be changing or doesn't get a good measurement then she will do a trans vaginal sono. At one visit I told her about some heavy cramping I was getting so they did a transvag then.

I go every other week and they always check it during the reg sono. They said as I get further along they will start checking it more carefully regularly.

  • I started seeing my MFM (along w/OB) at 16 weeks, and have had a transvaginal u-sound to check my cervix at each visit since (every 3 weeks).  I had a LEEP procedure 7 years ago, and I think that's why they started so early for me.  I also did IUI/IVF for several years, so the transvaginal u-sound was old hat for me!
  • I go to MFM every 2 weeks and they usually just do a quick sonogram to make sure everything appears normal. I've only had one pelvic exam so far this pregnancy and that was by my OBGYN.
  • My MFM does a transvaginal after the sono to measure the cervix.  They will stop measuring at 32 weeks.

  • My MFM does a transvaginal u/s at every visit after the abdominal u/s to check my cervical length.

  • My MFM checks my cervix via abdominal u/s at the every 4 week growth u/s.  However, at today's appt and at the last one they couldn't really see my cervix b/c a baby was in the way.  They did not do a trans-vag u/s and didn't seem concerned.

My OB also told me to ask them about whether I should have cervical checks (I believe the OB meant manual ones) and the MFM said no, unless I am having symptoms to indicate that it is necessary.
