1st Trimester

1st appt - no heartbeat, nervous

Hello to everyone, this is my first time posting. As well this is my 1st pregnancy, so maybe I'm overreacting but who knows. Today I had my first appt with the Doctor and everything seemed alright however they were unable to find a heartbeat. :( I believe I am nine weeks so I don't know if this is normal or not, but I am sacred now and not really sure how to take it. I go for my first ultrasound on Tuesday, where I am hoping for some better results. Is anyone else going through this, or these emotions? And am I overreacting at being scared and nervous?

Re: 1st appt - no heartbeat, nervous

  • I know it's hard but try not to worry.  They couldn't hear my son's HB with the doppler until 14 weeks because I had an anterior placenta.  A tipped uterus can also make it hard to hear.  GL!

  • Your doctor is an idiot for even trying to find the heartbeat via doppler at 9 weeks. It's next to impossible. Your baby is still behind your pelvic bone and it's so very tiny. I'm sorry that they even tried this, only to have your anxiety shoot through the roof.

Your first u/s will tell you far more than a doppler ever could anyway. Try to relax until Tuesday.

  • You can only hear the heart beat through an ultrasound this early. It is pointless trying to use a doppler because it will not work yet.

This.  The baby is till sooo tiny that I'm surprised they even tried a doppler.  I'm sure your u/s will reveal a healthy little one squirming away!!!  Good luck!!!

  • I agree with PP's.  Your OB shouldn't have even tried.  At the U/S you should be able to see the heartbeat on the screen at this point so GL at your U/S appt!!

  • My OB couldn't get the heartrate at 10 weeks with my first. But when he examined me I was definitely pregnant. As other PPs have said, there are lots of perfectly safe reasons you couldn't hear it. Don't panic.

  • Like everyone else said I really think it was crazy of your doctor to try! Mine told me that they don't try listening for one until after 11 weeks.  I'm sure that at the U/S apt you will be able to see the heartbeat but you may not be able to hear it. So keep your head up and try not to worry!

  • Thanks everyone! I appreciate all the news that its nothing I need to worry extra about! Good Luck to you all as well!
  • It's perfectly normal not to find the heartbeat so early, it was hard for my doctor to find mine at 12 weeks.

I agree! My OB does an u/s before even attempting the Doppler.  Don't even worry about it!!!!! That little baby is in there swimming laps!

  • My DR won't even look for a heartbeat until at least 10 weeks. When I asked her why she said b/c many times you just can't find it and she never wants to make her new mommies nervous.

They saw the baby and it measured right where they expected, correct? Than guess what- that baby is okay :)

  • I can't believe your dr tried to hear the hb that early. My dr will not listen until 12 weeks bc it's so tiny. Even then it took time at my 12 week visit with DS. I'm sure Tuesday can't come soon enough for you.

  • They wouldn't even try at my 9 week because the doctor said it was almost always too early to hear.

Try not to get too nervous!

  • Last time I was pregnant, my doctor tried to find the h/b with the doppler at 13 weeks, and couldn't, and said that happens some times and absolutely nothing is wrong.
