I'm 7 weeks along and sooooo constipated. Is that normal? I tried drinking more water, eating more fiber, and prunes. Nothing seems to help. Might be getting worse. Any suggestions besides OTC meds?
Unfortunately, it is caused partly by the increase in progesterone levels during pregnancy and is just one of the little joys we get to deal with My ob gave me a list of meds that are safe to take during pregnancy. I'd ask your doc or there may be a list online. I believe she said metamucil was OK to take but I don't have the list in front of me. Hope you feel better soon!

Do you drink coffee? A couple of prunes and one cup of coffee a day seems to keep things on track for now.
I will not waste my days
Making up all kinds of ways
To worry about all the things
That will not happen to me
So I just let go of what I know I don't know
And I know I'll only do this by
Living in the moment
Here are some tips that I have figured out over the past few weeks:
1. 30+ grams of fiber/day
2. 70+ ounces of water/day
3. Colace or generic at night (I take the max dose)
4. Metamucil 2x/day
5. Helpful foods: apples, prunes, coconut, warm prune juice in the morning, fiber bars, fiber cereal, dried edamame, baked beans.
Also remember that it takes a few days for fiber to start working in your system, it is not overnight, but you if you need faster relief ask your dr about taking senekot, I use this as a last resort once a week (it is a laxative and you cannot take it every day)
Good Luck! I still struggle with this but am starting to get it under control using the tips above
Sadly, it's normal. If you can find McVites digestive biscuits (they are in the international food aisle, from the UK) saved my life during my pregnancy.
Sticking to "colon friendly" vegetables really helps:
2. Eat vegetables and fruits with color
- Vegetables and fruits of all colors will help you maintain a healthy colon. These foods are rich in anti-oxidants which help you fight the risk of cancer. They also strengthen your immune system, on top of helping you get a healthy colon.
Cabbage & beans are great!
You might try adding fiber gummies too.
Colace is pregnancy safe. Ask your doctor how much you are allowed daily. Good luck, being backed up is really difficult.
The constipation is so frustrating because I eat a lot of fiber in my diet. My doc recommended taking colace to help out. I'm taking one a day and it seems to be doing the trick. If I miss it for a day or two I can really tell a difference. GL, I know it sucks.
I am drinking a big glass of prune juice as we speak! However, just a small cup of coffee in the morning has been the only cure so far for me. I am interested in tryng this colace that everyone speaks of! Interesting.

I have had the same problem Asked my OB about it & she suggested taking Colace AND Mirilax everyday, eat extra fiber which I do in the form of Metamucil wafers & a bowl of Raisin Bran in the morning & drink prune juice. Usually doing all of the above helps within 24 hours! Good luck to you - I know how miserable it can be
