I feel like there is such a hodge podge of ways to pronounce -line names (INE vs EEN vs YNN).
My rules are as follows:
1. If it's spelled "eine", I pronounce it "INE," true to Germanic phonetic rules
2. If it's spelled "ine" it seems like a toss up (hence this post)
INE names: Caroline, Emmeline, Coraline, Madeleine, Clementine
EEN names: Justine, Christine
YNN names: Kathrine, anything that ends with an -yn (Marilyn, Madelyn, etc.)
Ones I'm not sure about: Adeline, Madeline, Ottoline (I usually default to INE pronunciation with these)
What are your opinions? I suppose it will always be a toss-up with these names...
Re: What are your rules for pronouncing -ine names??
Oh crap, I thought Emmeline was pronounced "emma-leen."
Caroline and Clementine are the only ones that I think get the "line as in line dance" pronunciation every time. Otherwise... I would just ask the person.
I follow these same "rules."
In regards to Adeline, Madeline, and Ottoline I would use the INE every time.
Madeline= Madalynn
Madeleine= MadaLine
Really? Lol I'd be pissed too (at my parents). Caroline is a pretty common name, and is definitely spelled CaroLINE. Guess her parents didn't get the memo ;P.
