Ergo + Toddler + Pregnant

Anyone wear a toddler (32 lbs) in an Ergo while pregnant?

We're going to London next week to watch the Olympics. It will be long days and lots of walking for DS. I'd love to not bring a stroller because it will really slow us down.

Do you think a back carry with the Ergo (just regular size) will be okay at 15 weeks pregnant? We haven't been using a carrier much but a few months ago we were on an outing and I took it. His shoulders are well above the top of the carrier but it wasn't too bad for either of us.

I could have DH wear him but DH is really tall (6'5") and DS, for some reason, has even less seat space in the Ergo when DH is wearing him.

Re: Ergo + Toddler + Pregnant

  • I don't use an Ergo, but I back carry my 18-month old often in a woven wrap and I am 38 weeks pregnant. I know other moms who wear their older kids as well. If a front carry is still comfortable for you, there really is no problem with that either. Just like any time, wear only to the point of comfort and stay hydrated. Keep to the 80% of pre-preg activity rule and don't push yourself. Wearing during early PG is great practice for building strength to wear during later pregnancy or tandem wearing.

Because you haven't been wearing your child much, I would expect some fatigue to catch up with you. I would plan for DH to do some of the wearing even if that isn't your optimal set up.

    Have fun!

  • I would never take a stroller to London, add in the Olympics and it'll be a nightmare! I know that children under one have to be "tied to a parent" or have their own tickets. I'd get your husband to carry as much as possible.

  • Yes, stroller in London is a nightmare. Shudder to think of dragging it into a tube station.

I think we're just going to wing it with the Ergo and leave stroller at home. He can also ride on DH's shoulders as a back up.

Thanks for the reminder that BWing should be eased into. I'll keep my BWing to short windows for the first few days.

Tickets: yeah, we had to pony up for a ticket for him to each event. It was $$$ because we got tickets late when there wasn't as much availability. Only good deal we got was an age ticket to fencing. Just ?2!!

  • Ari is 30 lbs & I've worn him at least once a week or so throughout this pregnancy. I do find hip carries pretty uncomfortable right now (pretty much since late 2nd tri), front carries went out the door pretty quick, but back carries feel totally fine. It's almost like it helps balance the huge extra weight in front, actually, it's kind of nice.

I've been almost exclusively using a toddler Kinderpack. I'll occasionally use a ring sling or rebozo length wrap, but I can only do a one shoulder carry for a really short amount of time now - like we're talking 15 - 20 mins.

  • I'm still wearing my DD and I'm almost 21 weeks pregnant. She's much smaller though, 18lbs.
