Urine test results- concerned!

I had my first prenatal appointment today with a nurse and she ordered urine and blood work.  I have Kaiser insurance and they email you results as soon as they are ready and I got a few of them tonight.  I'm really worried about some of my urine results.  It says that I tested positive for Leukocyte Esterase (should test negative) and I have mucous and Amorphous Crystals present.

Anyone know what this means?  Of course it's after hours and I'm really worried about a UTI or something.

Re: Urine test results- concerned!

  • Unfortunately I'm not familiar with these, but did you try googling it? Do you have any UTI or yeast infection symptoms?

  • it can easily mean you didnt have a clean catch. the leukocyte esterase is a test for white blood cells. The mucous is usually normal in urine from your secretions. You might have a uti but if your not in pain when you pee it isnt bad. Just relax for now and contact them in the morning. and drink lots of water to help  flush anything out.

No, I'm not, which is weird and confusing.

This. I had two symtom-free UTIs when I was pregnant with DD and I normally never get UTIs. My doctor explained they just happen more frequently during pregnancy and don't always show symptoms - no big deal, a round of antibotics cleared it right up. Don't worry!

This totally. Don't stress, if you aren't uncomfortable with uti symptoms wait for results from the doc in the morning. Leuks can be seen from skin bacteria if your urine picked it up on the way out, you may not have gotten a good clean catch or a midstream urine. If your doc is concerned he/she can send a sample for culture, they can check for squamous cells(skin cells) with that. If it were something to stress about the lab would notify someone who would notify you to go to the ER if it were necessary. People come into our ER at all times of the night with "lab results" being their cheif complaint. You are fine to wait it out and hear the result from your doctor. Btw, I work for Kaiser and have Kaiser insurance as well.

  • Since you have Kaiser, you should email your doctor on KP.org and ask her if there is anything to be concerned about since it said positive and it should be negative. Normally, if it is something to be concerned about the doctor will call or email after they get the results and review them. Good luck!

  • This result is very common for all of the reasons mentioned above, normal "good" bacteria from the skin can sometimes look like leukocytes on a urine sample and that is from not giving the best clean catch sample. Same with mucous.

Since you are not having symptoms, don't be surprised if your doctor waits until the offical culture report is back before doing anything. This means they will let the sample grow for 24-48 hours and see if there is any real bacteria in there that needs to be treated. If there isn't, you will likely need to repeat the sample in a few days. If there is bacteria, they will give you the right antibiotic and clear it right up.

This is why test results shouldn't be posted until a doctor has reviewed them and discussed them with the patient.

You have white blood cells in your urine.  Why?  Maybe a UTI.  Maybe inflammation.  Maybe it's nothing to be concerned about.  But, you've just spent a lot of time worrying about something that none of us can interpret without your doctor's guidance.

    Brilliant.

    I completely agree.

Thank you!  This is exactly why I posted this question, I figured there would women with experience or knowledge of urinalysis to put my mind at rest while I wait to hear from the doctor.  I have a good friend who lost her baby due to a UTI at 15 weeks because it didn't cause symptoms and went untreated and knowing this caused me to worry a bit (can you really blame me?).  Thanks for the helpful comments.

I have the same insurance. It's annoying too cuz some results they won't post online for us, like th beta hcg's I had to call for the results. I generally do know what I'm looking at, as I'm a nurse, but not everyone does. And it just leads to undue worrying and self diagnosis with the help of dr. google.

    Me three.

OP, nothing stands out as threatening. But, I'm not a doctor and I'm pretty sure that no one responding is one either. You should call the doctor to verify the results or wait until your next appt.

  • I'm a lab scientist at our local medical center, so I feel pretty good answering your question....I do this for a living! Amorphous crystals are a common, non-pathological part of some people's urine. Some people have them all of the time, others get them every now and then. Nothing to worry about. The leukocyte esterase is a chemical given off by white blood cells in the body. Small amounts can be normal, but elevated amounts, or having it for a long time, can indicate a mild UTI. If those are the only two "abnormal" findings on your urine test, don't worry. If they find the Esterase again, you may be given an antibiotic. Hope this helps!
