Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Need your thoughts on my ER visit please

Hi ladies, I am new here and experiencing my first miscarriage (was also my 1st pregnancy). I went to the ER last night because of bad cramping and backache and bleeding. I was expecting the worst for sure because it was a good amount of blood. I am pretty sure I am (was) 7 weeks.

I have been experience bleeding all day and had horrible cramps all night last night and this morning. I have had some small clots and quarter sized clots. I am sure I am miscarrying but unsure of what/when something happened, and if I have passed the tissue. I guess I want to know what to expect, if I have miscarried yet or not.

The doc said they couldn't see anything on the ultrasound. She said it may be too early to see anything, but I am thinking the baby might have stopped growing a week or two ago? If that is the case, would it have absorbed into my body, or will I pass tissue? My hcg level was 410 in the ER last night, and that's the only time I've had it checked. I know that's really low for 7 weeks. The dr. said my cervix was closed so I don't know if I should expect to pass tissue? Or if there is anything to pass since they didn't see anything on the ultrasound?

I was supposed to go to my OB next Tuesday the 31st for our first appt and 8 week scan. We called this morning and the nurse said to come in Friday to get hcg levels checked. I know it will be bad news, I just want to know what to expect now from my body.

I appreciate any insight you ladies have, as I have not been able to talk to my OB yet. Such a sad, emotional day. Sigh. Thanks in advance.

  • I'm very sorry you're going through this. Having gone through three miscarriages I can tell you that the primary way you're going to know whether you've passed all the tissue and whether the miscarriage is complete is through another blood draw and an ultrasound. There is no set standard for a miscarriage. To me, they're like snowflakes, all a little unique on their own.

With an HCG of 410, that's pretty low so you may have passed the majority of it last night and this morning. You may find yourself continuing to bleed and pass some tissue. It may stop for awhile (like a # of days) and then you might have another little surge again. Hopefully on Friday your doctor can give you another ultrasound and tell you where you are in the process.

I've actually been miscarrying in my doctor's office when she was doing an ultrasound and she helped it along by pulling out tissue so they really can be helpful in that regards.

Lots of hugs to you. I know this must be devastating, but it's more common then you think. 1 in 4 women is the stat for a miscarriage. It's emotionally devastating but you've come to the right place for people who totally understand every emotion you're going through.

  • This is also my first pregnancy and miscarriage, and I'm actually still waiting to pass everything, so I can't really speak to what you should be expecting.

However, I can relate to how badly this sucks and how awful you may be feeling physically, mentally, and emotionally, and I just wanted to say that I'm sorry you're going through this.

I hope your visit on Friday gives you more answers.

  • Thank you for replying ladies, I really appreciate it. Cali, that was very helpful. Friday seems a long way off but hopefully I'll get some answers. TK, I hope the process goes as well as can be expected for you. Waiting is really awful. I am feeling for both of you and your losses. It's so hard to go from such excitement to such devastation. Wishing you both the best for sticky babies next time.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss dear. ((((hugs))))

I don't know much about natural miscarriage since my body didn't do it right so I had to have a D&C.

  • First I just want to say I'm so sorry you are going through this! I had a miscarriage on 7/15/12 and experienced everything you are talking about. My HCG level was very low as well and they told me that unless your HCG level is 2000 or more, they will not be able to see anything on an ultrasound. Ultimately having your HCG level redrawn will be the answer on whether or not it was for sure a miscarriage. When I had mine drawn 2 days after my miscarriage, my numbers had dropped which confirmed it. Again I'm so sorry for your loss. Give yourself time to grieve and cry when you need to. This is a very scary thing to experience and I would not wish it upon my worst enemy! I hope this helps a little bit at least! <LOTS OF HUGS TO YOU>

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. I also lost my first pregnancy to a natural m/c & was about as far along as you. I had two/three days of heavy bleeding & cramping & then four/five days of lighter bleeding. ((Hugs))
