waking up screaming

My LO goes to sleep great some nights and other night he screams and doesn't give up. And in the middle of the night he wakes up screaming nothing makes him stop except to nurse. So do i let him cry it out at night if i know he shouldn't need to eat?

Re: waking up screaming

  • I would say that if all his other needs are met and you know he's not ill or in pain then you will have to decide whether or not you feel comfortable letting him CIO.  Obviously it will also depend how he's eating/drinking during the day as some LOs take in a good share of their food/drink over night.  My DS wakes up crying so hard, like he's terrified, and it takes me a while to get him calmed down.  He weaned from nursing so I try to snuggle and rock with him for a few minutes in an attempt to calm him before offering a bottle.  He does not STTN and usually has 2 bottles between 6 p.m. and 5 a.m. and I'm okay with that.

  • L does this periodically. In fact, just tonight she has woken up twice fussing. I don't even move that direction. Within 5-10 minutes she is back asleep. I used to wake up and feed her, and that usually led to her to wake up the next night wanting food. I don't feed her unless we have reached the 8-10 hour mark and she won't go back to sleep (very rare). Otherwise, she is asleep within a few minutes.

  • If my DS wakes up screaming and wants to nurse, I feed him.  My sleep is far too important to me and I want him to go back to sleep as soon as possible so I can, too.  :)
  • If this happens for more than a few days I would go to the Dr. and have him checked out just to be safe. My LO did the same thing and he ended up have a double ear infection. He would wake up screaming because the pressure would build up in his ears and hurt him.
