1st Trimester

Waiting and waiting...

My first prenatal appt. isn't until August 10.  At that point I will be 9w 6d.  The wait is killing me!  Then, I keep wondering about whether or not I will even get an ultrasound or be able to hear the heartbeat, or will I have to wait even longer!?  At this point, I need some kind of proof that all is okay with this baby.  This is my first pregnancy... You can tell, right? :)

Do you think it would be weird if I called the office and asked them if they usually do a Doppler or ultrasound at the first appt.?  On the doc's website, it says they will do family history and blood work, but does not say anything about hearing the heartbeat or ultrasound.

Re: Waiting and waiting...

  • I would call and ask. I actually have to do that myself so I can find out if DH should come with me.

  • I'm in the same boat with the waiting, my first prenatal on Aug. 16 :( and I will be 11 weeks!  All doctors are different, but with my first pregnancy they did doppler only, with the first appt.  I'm very excited!  They told me told plan for the first appt to last 2 hrs. because of all the questions and exam.  And, I assume that, this is one of the reasons my doc waits until you are at least 8 weeks pergnant to be seen.  Hope this helps!  Wishing you a healthy pregnancy!

First appointment is typically family history, blood work, and urine testing. I didn't even see the doctor at my first appointment. 9 weeks is a bit early to hear the HB on doppler and most OBs only do one ultrasound around 20 weeks for the anatomy scan unless you opt into the NT scan around 12 weeks.

I totally understand that waiting is hard to do but unless there is something abnormal with your pregnancy (like bleeding for example) they typically don't do more than 1-2 ultrasounds. I was able to hear the HB on doppler around 11 weeks and they will do that at every appointment! GL!

  • Thanks so much for your response!  This puts my kind at ease.  I think I will call tomorrow and get my questions answered.
  • Michelle I'm in the same boat as you on all accounts!! I was just about to post asking if it's normal to have to wait this long, especially when it's your first and I feel like I don't know what I'm doing. I'm happy but jealous of women getting their US's at 7 wks or even earlier! My first appt will be with a nurse practitioner at 8 wks (same as you said, bloodwork, fam history (even though we already did that!)), then at 11.5 wks I'll finally see my OB. I really don't want to have to wait that long to know there's a HB!

  • Are we seeing a baby boom?!!  LOL  We keep the OB's office busy, that's for sure!
  • Hey! Im in the same boat! First pregnancy for me as well. I will have my first appointment Aug 7 and last week I was pretty confident with no worries. This week..I keep thinking, is it ok? Am I doing everything right? I just want to see or hear it just to make sure. Its driving me crazy. I called the doctors office and the put me through to a nurse and I asked all kinds of questions, and she also informed me they do the ultrasound and you can take home a picture if you want at the first appointment. They do all kinds of stuff on your first appointment. OK example..right now, Im having cramping....but last week when I had cramps, It was ok because it is "normal"..this week...It is suddenly abnormal in my eyes..lol. The nurse said as long as there is no red blood spotting than not to worry. :) Good luck!
  • Not weird at all to call! I had a "confirmation" appt at 6 weeks and I just thought that they would have me pee on a stick but instead we had our first ultrasound! If you will be 9 weeks by then I would think they would do an u/s but it wouldn't hurt to check with your dr so you know what to expect.

  • I'm in the same boat!  This is our first pregnancy too and I called the ob when we found out at 6 weeks and they told me they won't see me until 8-10 weeks so we're going at 9 weeks.  But, they did tell me they will do an ultrasound, blood work, then we will meet with the doctor.  Probably about 3 hours total.  I would call the doctor and ask what all they will be doing at the first appt.  I feel the same way about wanting more proof than a little plus sign on a few pregnancy tests :)  Good luck!
  • I would be equally impatient!  That seems like an awfully long time to wait for the first doctor's appointment.  I called my doctor the day I got my BFP and they scheduled me right at the start of my 6th week.
