1st Trimester

Flying in First Trimester

Is it safe to fly in first trimester? I just noticed it commented as part of another girls post and I never even gave it much thought. I have a 7 hour flight tomorrow to visit my parents and will be doing to 7 hour flight back in 10 days. I am 8 weeks tomorrow and so far did not have any severe complications... no spotting, or severe nausea, etc. :(

  • I still haven't seen my OB yet and won't until 11 wks, but I've read that when flying we're exposed to radiation so the longer the fligths the more radiation you receive. This amount though surely cannot be as much as an xray. Also, since you've got time between when you leave and come back, you should be fine. I'll be making coast-to-coast-to-coast flights at 10 weeks for work and there's no way for me to back out of it. It will be what it will be, and hopefully we've done enough other things right that it won't harm our babies!

  • You should be fine, just try to get up and walk/move around a bit every 2 hours to keep blood clots from forming.
  • I was in Africa when I received my first BFP with DS. I had to fly 12 hours to Europe, then 7 hours home, then 2 hours back to my home state. DS is a happy, healthy 15-month-old. You will be fine.

  • Hi there! I went on a business trip from LA to NYC, about a 6 hour flight, when i was 7 weeks. I made sure I drank a lot of water, the cabin pressure can cause dehydration. Also made sure I stood up and stretched for about 10-15 minutes every hour. This was easy because of all the water I was drinking. I'm like you, I have had no m/s, nausea, bleeding nor any alarming symptoms. When I got back my frst appointment was the following week and everything was perfectly fine! Enjoy your trip!

  • I just flew by myself with Liam and will be flying again in November. Just keep hydrated, make sure you have snacks, and get up and walk the aisles if you feel restless.

  • Flight attendants do it all the time.  My cousin's wife flew until 32 weeks with her first pregnancy and 22 with her second pregnancy.

  • You will be totally fine.  I found out I was pg while on vacation and flying was fine.  I did elect to have a pat down instead of going through the body scanner, but even that was me being overly cautious.

  • Unless you are incredibly high risk and already on bed rest, you're fine.

I would probably be overly cautious like PP though and let security know you are PG so you don't need to go through scanners

I flew from the east coast to CA at 4 wks pregnant, and the only caution my doctor gave me was to avoid the body scanner. I opted for the metal detector and a pat-down, and everything was fine. Just be sure you stay hydrated!
