Ok....I know everyone is going to have an opinion, and that is what I am looking for! I was hoping to get some feedback on the name "Emerson" for a boy. This is a family name, and we both like it for a FN, so I started looking online, and it seems a lot of people use this as a girl's name...but I never thought of it this way until I started looking online.
Since we are keeping the name a secret from friends and family, I can't really try it out on anyone I know. But since no one here really knows us (lol) I figured it was worth a shot to ask without giving anything away! What are your thoughts on this name for a boy? Good or bad, I don't mind, I just want honesty! Thank you!
Re: Thoughts on a Boy's Name
Sadly this. I'd stay away from it bc lately I have only heard it used for girls.
I would use it as a middle name but not a first name. Unfortunately, Emerson has been used on a lot of girls lately. Also, anything with the prefix "Em" has the possibility of being seen as feminine.
It's too bad because Emerson is not feminine, and I do not care for it on girls. But I wouldn't want your son to be teased so I would steer clear.
Love it, and love it that you're using it for the right sex. I actually have never met an Emerson, male or female. I think it's great!
FWIW, if you're a little iffy because it seems to have gone to the girls, I met a male Addison, Avery and Madison this year and none of them seemed to be bothered by the fact that they had a name that has become popular for girls recently (all elementary students).

My first reaction was that it's too far gone to the girls. But then I thought about it, and I have never met a girl named Emerson - or a boy for that matter, but to me it's clearly a boy name despite the trend. So it's quite possible that if you've never heard of it as a girl name outside the Internet, you won't run into many people who use it. Most of my friends give their kids traditional and/or religious names, as do most of the parents of the kids at DD's school (she went to a Catholic pre-K where the only duplicate name in the class was Leo/Leonardo, of all things). I know from the SSA stats and this board that the masculine-sounding-surnames-for-girls-names trend (along with the -aden trend, etc.) exists, but I haven't encountered it a lot in real life.
To me this is a double win: a family name, and a boy name on a boy. I think you should go for it.
