My mother teaches in a rather poor school district and had twins named Lemonjello and Orangejello in her class a few years back. Oh, and she also had an older sibling of a child named Finally Done, whose mother had had 6 children.
Lemonjello and Orangejello seems like a bit of a stretch but I have met a girl named Pajama and my dad taught a girl named Vegyna. It's really easy to say that it's racist or a lie, but people, white, black, asian, do name their children crazy things.
After teaching for so many years, I have seen many of the names that people say are urban legends. And some that are worse. However, I'm not sure about the jello twins.
I don't know why we should all jump to the conclusion that everyone's lying.
What gives us the right to mock baby Onli (from a post made a few days ago) and not Finally Done?
Also, we automatically assume anyone who names their child Braylynn is 'uneducated'. How is that not classist of us?
Sorry, but I don't think we should jump to conclusions. OP didn't say anything about the predominant race at her school -- that was ALL in your interpretation of it. So you're the one who made the association.
I find it odd that so many people know (or know someone who knows) a La-a, a set of twins named Oranjello and Lemonjello, a Shithead, etc., yet these names never show up in the SSA rankings.
Yea, you never know. I have seen a student named Areola with my own two eyes (she was white for those who might wonder) and a coworker has a student named Manly Shank on her class list for this school year. Haven't seen him yet, but I saw a picture on the online attendance and he definitely exists.

I'm a teacher and have definitely seen strange and unique names. But the ones OP said are well known jokes, and these posts seem to be designed to elicit a negative reaction. I just think it's rude. To each their own.

It's just that often the tellers of these stories imply racism. She didn't go into that detail, which is why I said possibly. Also, for the the number of times that these stories are told, the weird names don't show up on the SSA list, including the beyond the top 1000 list. I think a name has to be used at least 5 times to show up on the list, so I guess it's possible that there are 4 Lemonjellos and Oranjellos born per year out there that we don't have the data for. But I still think it's incredibly unlikely.

Did you read the snopes.com link provided?
This. Do you REALLY think there are a ton of actual Lemonjello/Oranjello twins running around and they all just happen to know someone on The Bump?
And as far as "Also, we automatically assume anyone who names their child Braylynn is 'uneducated'. How is that not classist of us?"
The point is that statistically, names ARE related to socio-economic status. Thus people make inferences about a child's parental education level based on what they chose. Good, bad or indifferent. I know we harp on, but read the baby names chapter in Freakonomics.
Its not that far off to have crazy names. There is actually a woman named Marijuana Pepsi... you can google that. I went to school with a Sunshine Cupp, her sister was Crystal Cupp. I knew a woman named Strawchelle, and she was named that because her mother was drinking from a straw when she went into labor. No joke. I also knew a Rusty ***. I know the jello names are fake... but strange ass names do exist!

Reading the snopes article, it seems like this focuses on low socioeconomic or people who are of a certain race. My mom worked in a fancy rich school. The parents of this one child were a lawyer and a nurse. They both had great educations and named their child Flash Gordon. It can occur in any family!
Someone once posted a link to a phonebook webpage listing Lemonjello and Orangejello, and IIRC they are adult twins in Florida...
Personally, I have seen with my own two eyes a father and daughter pair named LaOrange and LaOrangea. I have no idea whether the mother of LaOrange craved oranges while pregnant.
Thanks for the link. I hate these posts and don't know why people keep telling these ridiculous stories.
I agree 100% with KearaD.
Yeah, I've heard this story a few times over the last couple years (along with the always delightful La-a story) and I always give a well-deserved side-eye.
I don't understand why everyone is hating on me for posting this, it's not a lie and I've never even heard of these names anywhere else until you guys said you had. I met the two kids that I posted about and was just trying to give you all a little laugh. I never said whether these kids where black, white, asian, etc. so I don't see how it's racist. Geez, I guess I won't post anything else if I just get called a liar.

I was not trying to be rude or get a negative reaction from anyone. I've PERSONALLY met the children that I posted about. Gosh, I wish I had my mother's class lists so I could scan them and put them on here to show you guys that I'm telling the truth, but I don't. I guess that just means I will continue to be called a liar even though I'm not. All I was trying to do was make people laugh with a TRUE story about ridiculous names.
Re: Thought some of you guys might find this amusing/disturbing...
I think your mom is lying to you. And is possibly a bit racist. Sorry.

Thanks for the link. I hate these posts and don't know why people keep telling these ridiculous stories.
And it's always "my friend is a nurse in a maternity ward" or "My friend is a teacher."
Either the poster is a pathological liar, or their friends and family are.
Kind of sad, actually.
