Percentiles drop @ 9mos?

Layla has been consistently on the 50th percentile at every checkup, today we had our 9 month appt and seh went from 50th to 25th in both height & weight... Doc says that if she's eating fine and very active that she's fine and it's because she's so busy, did this happen to anyone else? I worry about her lack of milk intake, she doesn't nurse as much because she's on the go all the time, and when she does stop to nurse she wants off the boob and off to play ASAP,  and she also has one 6 oz formula bottle a day... I think I may up it to 8 oz if she'll take it.

  • Li's weight went from 25% to 10%, but the doctor said it's likely because she's much more active.  She is eating much more than before.  There was actually an article in the Wall Street Journal today about how the percentages are just driving parents nuts but are really outdated and don't take genetics into account.  Let me see if I can find it.

  • We went from 25th to less than 5th, I am not really worried. She's strong and developing well.

  • I'm not worried at all about it, I just didn't know it was common, the Pedi didn't seem concerned , so I'm not going to be either.

Thanks Liz for the link :) Good read!

  • It didn't change for her weight but it dropped for her height. The pediatrician wasn't concerned at this point.

  • A's percentile dropped, which was all his doctor said. He said that that's normal around this time and that he was fine. So I didn't really ask any further - especially since he was in the 90/95 range anyways.

DD's percentage dropped from 80/75% to 50% in height & weight. I asked the PA if that was concerni g because I thought for sure she was over 20 pounds (she was only 18) and she said that it was fine.

  • Pretty much everyone I've spoken to has had constant decrease in percentiles from 6-9 months....except LBB and kagl's Luke.  Our kids are jumping up percentiles.  According to my doctor, babies hit their growth spurts at different times.  So L (and a lot of babies on this board) might have hit them earlier, and now some of us are hitting them now.

This is what I was thinking. Percentile drops aren't an issue unless there's some kind of pattern.

This exactly. Abby weight has dropped from 10th (4 months), to 5th (6 months) and now 2nd/3rd (9 months). Her heigh has dropped from 75th (4 months), to 50th (6 months) and now 11th (9 months). There is cause for concern in Abby's situation.

Also, as I said in a post about "small babies" (sorry I fogot who posted it), doctors look at the heigh-to-weight ratio. So, is your LO proportinate for her height and weight? That should be a better judge if your child is "healthy" and getting the proper nutrition.

  • DD went from 90th to 75th. Pedi isn't concerned and said she's right on track.
  • DD's dropped as well. She went from 75th for height & 25th for weight to now being 49th for height and 16th for weight (as of Monday). She just started crawling last week so I don't think it has to do with her being more active. The doctor didn't say anything to DH about it, though, so I'm not "too" worried.

  • DS dropped in weight. I can definitely tell, he was soooo chunky before and now just looks like a regular pudgy baby.

This is the same for DS. He was 10th percentile all along and is now 25th percentile. I think it just depends on the baby and as long as they aren't consistently dropping, then its nothing to worry about.
