Iron supplements

Most vitamins make me nauseous and I have a hard time swallowing large pills, so my prenatals, calcium & fiber supplements are all gummy.  But, my OB told me today that I'm anemic and need to take an iron supplement.  I googled but don't see anything in gummy form.

Any suggestions for something that is easy to swallow and easy on the stomach (I realize this may vary by person)?

Re: Iron supplements

  • Whole Foods has Floradix which is a liquid form and highly recommended by my midwife.  She said you can also get it cheaper at vitacost.com.  My sis has always had iron issues and with supplements hasn't been able to raise it much.  She eats cream of wheat a lot and said that is has helped much more than anything else she has tried.

  • You can try Slow FE.  You have to swallow them, but they are very small and not nearly as hard on the stomach as other iron pills.

  • I take prescription iron supplements for prenatal use called ferralet-90.  They taste like chocolate and are very tiny.  I haven't had a stomach issue other than consitpation.

This was what I was recommended.  I take the store brand bc they are cheaper and I haven't had any problems with constipation or them making me sick like the other supplements.  They are the size of the red ibuprofen tablets

This is what I use. Mix it in with a little orange juice and you're good to go. Can't even taste the iron supplement.

  • The reason they aren't in gummy form is because gummies look like candy to children, and an iron overdose is very bad health wise to a child (especially if the child ate a ton of the gummies).

  • My doc told me I was anemic after my glucose tolerance test.  I have always had an issue with iron but was never told that I needed a supplement.  I work in a natural foods store basically scoured the shelves until I found the smallest pill.  I have an issue swallwing big pills too:/

  • I use Solgar brand "Gental Iron". They don't use a lot of extra fillers/binders/crap in their vitamins like many companies do. The "Gental Iron" is powered and encapsulated in a capsule.
