Elliott for a girl....

So my husband and I both love the name Elliot/Elliette for a girl with a nn Ellie. Not sure how I feel about it being such an obvious boys name though, and peoples reactions to it. We originally fell in love with the name from the TV show scrubs as this was one of the main characters names. Thoughts/Opinions please!

Re: Elliott for a girl....

  • I really really dislike Elliot for a girl and the Elliette spelling is just awful.  I like Ellie for a NN tho, or a stand alone name.  A friend of mine just named her daughter Ellie.

  • I love the name Elliott, but only for a boy.  I just get sad every time I see a boy's name used on a girl.  There are so many beautiful girl names out there...and Ellie is always an option alone or as a nn for many other great girl names!
  • I personally do not care for it.

  • I kind of hate Elliott for a girl... and i really REALLY hate Elliette.  Blech.  There is nothing pretty or girly about it.

Edit:  Sorry, I know that was brutally honest...

Agreed. Elliot is one of the few boys names I like on girls because it doesn't sound particularly masculine to me.

  • It's trendy and silly to me.

Everybody on this board HATES Elliott for a girl...that being said, it's our girl name. She'll be named after DH's grandfather and his brother. We won't use it for a boy, because there is already a boy named that in the family...his brother! :) It's part of a double name for us and I love it. Now, please if you use it, spell it right. Elliott or Elliot.

I really dislike boy names becoming girl names. It's happening to so many nice boy names.

  • OP, obviously it's your DD, so your (and your DH's) opinions are the only ones that matter.

Buuutttttt....I would just be aware that the general reaction you are getting here is most likely the one you are going to get as you introduce your little girl to people, and it's probably going to be the same reaction she is going to get as she introduces herself when she gets older.

Oh, and for the love of Buddha, spell it Elliot.

  • Strongly dislike Ellie. Despite Elliott for a girl. Elliette is just ridiculous. At the rate this trend is going, people are going to be giving the side eye to boys named Elliott soon which is a shame.

  • Elliot is one of the few boy names I kind of dig on a girl--as a MN.  It does sound sort of feminine (or at least more so than most traditional boy names), but I still don't like it as a FN.  I'm also way over the Ellie trend.

  • I like it! Its one of the boys names I don't mind on a girl. And I think that getting it off a tv show is nothing to think badly of. I've considered it before because I love Ellie and didn't know whether to use Ellie as a nickname or a first name. I saw someone name their daughter it and thought it was cute. If you like it, go for it.

I have kind of liked the spelling Elliotte for a girl. It keeps the traditional boys spelling but makes it femine without changing it too much.

  • Having grown up with a unisex name that started as a boy's name...  No.  At least use a feminine legal name - Elia, Eleanor, something.  I've never been able to pull off feminine or elegant.  I am my name - neither masculine nor feminine, kind of frumpy and dated, no matter how girly I've tried to be.

I don't hate Elliot for a girl, but fortheloveofgod PLEASE give up on that atrocious Elliette spelling! Also, the nn Ellie is totally overdone (Eleanor, Eloise, Eliza, etc.). If you are going to go with a non-traditional name for her, then own it and call her by it. Otherwise, move on to something else because your heart isn't really in it then IMO.

Ugh.  I say this every time someone wants to name their daughters Elliott, but since you say you specifically got the idea from Scrubs, I will reiterate:  The character on Scrubs was named Elliott because her parents wanted a boy.  And her parents really screwed her up.  Is this the image you really want to pass onto your daughter?

    I just don't understand it.

  • Please.. just no. This is a great name for a boy. I'm really sick of such nice masculine names getting stuck on cute little girls. If you like Ellie, name her that (I know someone with just that as their name) or use a girl's name that can turn into Ellie - there are TONS. Like seriously, tons.

I'm going to go against the trend and say that I like it for a girl. But I definitely prefer the correct spelling of Elliot/t. I tend to like boy names for girls, if they aren't overly masculine sounding and I think that Elliot is cute. I do agree with the others that I'm tired of the nn Ellie. For Elliott, I'd go with Lottie or something cute like that instead, or go with no nickname.

    NO for a girl.

  • Please please please do not spell it Elliette. That's jus awful. Why need to butcher a beautiful Scottish surname with a new spelling. Also, it changes the pronunciation quite a bit from ElliOTT to ElliETTE.

Since Elliott is my maiden last name, I've considered using it for a girl's name with the NN Elle.

  • PS. there are tons of different ways to spell Elliott (Eliot, Elliot, and Elliott). I'm sure you can find a great way to have variation and keep the traditional aspect of the name.

  • This.

I'm not usually a fan or boys names on girls AT ALL with the exception of Elliott (spelled this way) and the name Sloane.  I don't think either one are overtly masculine, especially when paired with a feminine middle name.  I plan on naming my girl Elliott but without any "Ellie" nickname.  I am over the "Ellie" trend but think Elliott is too great a name to pass up on!

If you like it, spell it correctly and didn't make it up...go for it.  Don't listen to what other people say.  I mean...as long as you're not maning her her Nevaeh or Brieannah (ugh!) who cares!

  • I don't get the large amounts of 'boy name' haters. I thinks its prettier as a girls name and the spelling with the extra e looks very feminine and sophisticated. Sounds like you love it...so do it!!! Funny, there's also a post asking about the name Perry ;)

  • My college roommate was a girl named Eliot. She was named for T.S. Eliot. I love her name, and she totally rocked it. We called her Els, Elbow, Smells, and Smelliot.

That said, I think Elliette is beyond silly.

  • Love love love Elliott for a girl!!!
  • I personally LOVE it (considered it myself, DH vetoed it).

I like the spelling in your post title (Elliott) over Elliette. Go for it if you both love it. While it's certainly not a favorite of many on this board, most of the posters are also of the mindset that at the end of the day, she's YOUR baby to name, not anyone else's. Name her what you two want. If others don't like it, they don't have to use it!

  • Elliott is a boy name...never should it be a girl name.

    Elliette is disgusting.

Oh sweet moses, this thread is making me want to bang my head against a wall.

    Seriously.  In so many ways.

I do not get boys' names on girls.  I really, really do not get choosing a boy name for a girl and then trying to make it feminine again by misspelling it.  Not only does it make the parents look poorly educated, it makes them seem schizophrenic.  What on earth is the point of having a girl, naming her a boy's name, but trying to make it look like a girl's name?

  • I'm usually all about old fashioned/traditional names, but I actually think Elliott on a girl would be kind of cute. Spelled that way.
