Induction question

Hey ladies,

For those of you who had to have both cervidil and pitocin can you explain the timeline/procedure? I'm not effaced or dilated at all, so I'm assuming I would need both...did they give the cervidil and send you home to wait for it to work before starting pitocin or is it something that all happens at once?

Re: Induction question

  • The way my dr used it with me was the cervidil was put in. I had to wait an hour and then walk around for an hour and it was to repeat 3 times.. it started working on the first donlse so they waited and then just went with pitocin to get things going even more. It was a great experience for me.. loved my induction. Sorry was lurking reading birth stories :).. good luck momma

  • With DS when I was induced they had me check in to the hospital at 8pm the night before my induction and they put the cervidil in at around 10ish that night and left it overnight.  Pretty sure when I got up to go to the bathroom at some point I lost it but it did it's job I guess.  The next morning at 6am they started the pitocin and I had my son at around one-ish.

  • I was given the Cervadil on Wednesday night around 6-7 p.m.  I woke up feeling contractions around 1 a.m. on Thursday.  They gave me Pitocin around noon on Thursday.

This is basically what they did for me as well, except I didn't have DS until the next morning, so overall it took like 36 hours. Went in Monday night around 7 and got the cervadil, started pitocin the next morning and DS FINALLY made his appearance the following morning at 7 a.m.

    Thanks ladies, very helpful stories!

One other question-- did you have to be hooked up to continuous monitoring while being induced? I know with pitocin there is obviously an IV but I'd rather be able to walk around and move at least with the pole than have to be monitored and in bed (easy to say now haha)...I've heard some places let you be monitored for 15-30 min and then walk for awhile, etc.

They required me to be continuously monitored throughout the induction, so no getting up and walking around (except for bathroom breaks). I think that's standard at my hospital for inductions. It wasn't that bad, though, I will say.
