weight management

During my first pregnancy, I gained 52 pounds! In the 14 months of having my son, Ive lost a total of 80 lbs since I went in to the hospital to have him.

Now Im just starting out again and really going to try hard to maintain this time.

I NEVER ate horribly and never have been a junk food eater but Ive also not been very active until now with my toddler.

My goal this time around is to stay active, drink lots of water and not my sweet tea and really try to eat better and not give into the cravings.

Any helpful ideas that you previous moms have tried to maintain a healthy pregnancy weight?

Re: weight management

  • Sorry, no advice.  I'm in a similar boat as you, kind of.  In March of this year, when ds turned 9, I *suddenly discovered* that I was 20 pounds heavier than the day I delivered him.  Egads!  So, I set off to lose weight, and I have managed to lose that 20 pounds by now.  I only gained 30 pounds with each kid (and ds is the youngest), but holy smokes I don't want to gain that much this time -- not when I'm starting out behind in the game.  I'm hoping to gain no more than 15-20, and Doc has given me permission to continue eating better and exercising more.  He said he doesn't want to see me lose more than 3 pounds per month for the first few months, and that by 6 months he would like to see the scale going back the other direction.

The only thing I can think of for you is to join www.myfitnesspal.com where you can track every bite you take and set your goals, such as "maintain current weight" or "gain half pound per week" or whatever.  They give you a calorie limit to work with.  And you can input any exercise you do.  This is the only way I was able to lose my 20 pounds - accountability!

    Good luck!

  • I'm in the same boat. I gained 60 with my son and still have 15 of it. I want to try to gain 25-35 or less if I can this time. I was pretty carefree with DS, I never had a problem with weight gain and figured it would just come off easy... not so much.

  • Weight management has been on my mind lately too. I gained 45lbs with my daughter, but managed to lose it plus and extra 20lbs. As PP mentioned, myfitnesspal has really helped me with weight loss and I plan to continue watching my calories during the pregnancy. My cravings were always for crap food during my first pregnancy though, so I imagine this could be quite a challenge!

  • I'm also in the same boat. I gained 50 lbs with DS, but I gave myself free reign to eat what I want. The whole "eating for two" philosophy became a way of life ;) This time I'm watching what I eat and counting calories. My Fitness Pal is awesome for counting calories! I've tried to keep up with exercising, but my symptoms are bad x1000 this time. I'm hoping to gain between 25 and 35 this pregnancy.

  • My first 2 pregnancies I gained far more than I should have.  With the second I exercised a lot and still gained weight.  I took it off pretty quickly though.  For me I want to make sure I don't gain too much the first trimester.  Also, if you remain active easier to ramp up your exercise after the baby.
  • I was fairly religious about working out 3 times a week on an elliptical during my 1st pregnancy. It was a great, low impact way of exercising without flopping around too much, but I still broke a sweat. I also think it made laboring a lot easier. When I got to pushing, it wasn't nearly as big a deal as I thought it would be. I plan on doing the same routine this time, not only to continue feeling good, but to give me a better starting point for toning up post-delivery.

  • I'm a first time mom but I work at maintaining my weight through eating right (no time to exercise while working full time and going to school full time). I plan to do the same and add some light exercise during my pregnancy. I plan to start walking at least a few nights a week.

  • Huh, you read my mind.  I was thinking earlier we needed a post about this topic.

I am looking to gain around 10 lbs with this pregnancy, as per my MW.  I gained 20 during my last pregnancy, until the pre-e kicked in, and then gained another 20 in a big hurry before I was induced, for a total of 40.  Of course, once I delivered, I lost the 20 pre-e lbs literally overnight-ha!  My body is one of those that hung onto weight while BFing, and so I had a hard time losing the rest.  I'm about 10 lbs up from when I got pg with DS.  I weaned a few weeks into TTC to help lose some weight before I got KU, but, I didn't know then that I was already KU.

Sorry for the long story.  I will be continuing to workout around 5 days a week, and really watching what I eat.  Since my pregnancy with DS, DH has become a vegetarian, so that is really helpful since he is no longer eating any bad stuff at all.

One thing that really made the pounds come on with DS was that I could only hold down pasta during 1st tri.  This time I plan to be faster on the uptake with starting B6 and maybe unisom or whatever else it takes to try to get the upper hand on the m/s.  Pasta is not my friend.

I've known I was pregnant for 1 week, and I still weigh the same.  1 week down, 35 to go!

  • I agree with everyone that said to use My Fitness Pal.  I gained over 50 lbs with my daughter and was 3 pounds away from my pre pregnancy weight when I found out I was expecting #2. I'm def going to try not to go overboard this time around. It's truly amazing/shocking to actually add up how many calories I was eating (after my pregnancy-I can't imagine DURING my pregnancy!). If you write down the handful of chips here, the cookie there, it REALLY adds up! My innocent little chocolate milk before bed (with 1% milk!) was almost 400 calories!! It's really eye opening! Good luck!

I've actually lost a couple of pounds, and if this nausea gets any worse, I suspect that will continue.

I plan on sticking to a fairly low carb menu, which is what I did before I got pregnant.  I don't plan on counting calories, but I'm also very aware that eating for two is not necessary.  I've been watching my diet for so long, I feel like I have a good idea of what falls within my nutritional guidelines.

I also ordered some prenatal exercise videos - it's just too hot to be outside around here right now, so I've been doing resistance training at home.  Once the videos come, I plant to do one a day, and find a prenatal yoga class.  I'm hoping to find someplace to swim, as well - I'm moving in less than a week, so will be trying to figure out what's on offer in my new location.

  • I am also in a similar boat. Its been hard to maintain workouts being so tired, but I push through them. I am also trying hard to stick with healthy foods, but its been hard, since I've been on the go a lot lately. I need to go to the grocery store, so I can pack food when going places.

  • I gained the "prescribed" amount with each of my pgs-35lbs with #1 and #2 and #3 and about 27lbs with #4 (was holding onto about 7-8lbs from #3 still).  Right now I've lost 2lbs (yay nausea...ick).  I'm also still holding onto those extra 8lbs, so I'm 8lbs above what I was when I got pg with #1 (well, ok, 6lbs right now with the weight loss).  I know my body very well after 4pgs, and in my last two pgs, I gained nice and slow until 18-22w, and then I gained 2lbs/w.  I tapered off and gained slowly again for a month, and then I gained 2lbs/w for 4 weeks.  Then I tapered off again.  No fun to watch the scale go up so fast for so many weeks.  But with the never ending hunger it's hard.  I'm not going to lie to myself (or others) and claim that I'm going to exercise x amount a week, because at this point exercising makes me want to puke.  And I'm not going to promise that I won't be eating all.day.long either because trying to be conservative with calories makes me sick too.  So I'll just try to make sure that what I'm eating is good and not crap.  Lots of fruit and veggies and protein and cut back on the bread (my kryptonite) and junk.  I'm hopeful that I'll lose weight faster this time post baby, but not too much.  I've btdt too many times to know that before 6mo, my body will not let go of more than 20lbs, and before a year, it won't let go of another 7lbs, even with meticulous calorie counting and insane work-outs.  I know for some bfing melts the weight off, but I guess it's the opposite for me.  I was naturally slender with little effort pre-kids, and I'm still thin, but I don't think slender applies anymore.

Good thing we're renewing our vows a month after the baby's born, that should be fun to squeeze into a pretty dress.  lol  Hello Bellefit girdle.
