1st Trimester

BFP! But concerned.

Hello again everyone :)

We just got our BFP last night! Which is GREAT. Except for I'm not supposed to get pregnant right now. I'm on low doses of Methorexate every week, which is a category x drug, and linked to birth defects. My husband and I are so confused. We had a miscarriage right before I started taking Methotrexate, and were heart broken. We're now so ready to have this child, but are afraid of the risks we're taking and what it could mean for our child's life.

I went in for an Ultrasound today, and I should be about 5 weeks (last period started on 6/15/12). The Dr. wasn't able to see a gestational sac, and while we're checking my hCG levels, I'm pretty worried. I think at five weeks we should be able to see the gestational sac, if not the fetus yet.

We are trying to hope for the best, that this baby will be able to grow into a healthy child, but it's really difficult to celebrate when so much is up in the air.

Does anyone have any experiences with high-risk pregnancies/ slow fetal development? Or any advice at all about this stage of pregnancy?

Thank you!

  • Unfortunately I have no experience with this, but T&P for you. Good luck!

  • It is possible, especially if you possibly ovulated a little late (or if you have longer than the average 28 day cycle). Our first scan was 45 days after my last cycle - even tho I told my doc again and again that I'd only peaked on my OPK just two weeks before they did the ultrasound - they found nothing on the scan. Two weeks after that, I went back and they found that we were 6 and a half weeks along with twins (meaning that we were only 4 weeks and a few days along at the first scan). If your positive had been back during the last week of June, I'd figure it was just a chemical pregnancy.. but since you just tested this week, there is always a possibility that your dates are off.

  • The PP mentioned you could have ovulated late. This happened for me I got an u/s at 5 weeks according to my LMP, checking for placement of the pregnancy as I've had 2 ectopics in the last 12 months. They saw nothing. They didn't see anything until a week later. I too had been avoiding pregnancy due to them telling me it was too dangerous, that I would likely have another ectopic. I had methotrexate, high dose(for the ectopic) 2 months prior.

Everywhere I read they say to wait 6 months or so to conceive, the RE I was consulting with says he waits a minimum 3 months after the dose I had, so I am worried too.

I don't think I'll stop worrying until it's born. I'm worried about the later u/s. I hope the baby is developed properly. I understand your worry, just do what you can, take your prenatels and pray, if you are the praying type.

  • Hi!  Congrats and good luck.  I am "approaching 5 weeks" as my Dr. put it.  We got BFP last Tues night and I was able to get an appnt last Wed because my last period was May 21.  Apparently I ovulated late.  But when we went we couldn't see anything on the Sonogram.  My Dr. said that was normal and did the blood test to confirm.  We got a positive confirmation today.  I have another sonogram next Mon.  Dr. said he hopes we could see something by then but no promises.  By then I will be 6 weeks (give or take).  So I would say don't worry that you couldn't see anything yet.  Good Luck!

  • Did your doctor say anything about the methorexate usage? or tell you to discontinue it now?

It's possible you ovulated late and so a sac wouldn't be seen yet. You should be able to see a sac with HCG levels over 1500-2000.
