Bottle/nipple question (also posted on BF)

We're finding DS doesn't eat as well when bottle feeding (e.g. he will "snack" on bottles and then I come home and he nurses eagerly).

This wasn't even close to an issue with DD, who ultimately preferred the bottle and paci to the breast (though we made it 10 months albeit multiple strikes).

Anyone have a LO like this? If you did, what bottles/nipples did you find success with? It's obviously an expensive experiment to partake in, so I wanted to see if there are any that are supposed to be the most like the actual breast.

  • My DD always did better on the breast than the bottle. I didn't consider it any big deal. She just ate to satisfaction at the bottle and got a better feeding when we could breast feed.

We had whatever natural nipple we bought, she used it and then ate well when at the breast. I never thought to worry about what nipple to use. She did well overall, so that was success.

My niece wouldn't take the bottle--until one day my sister figured it out that she wouldn't take the colored nipple.  Once she gave my niece a clear nipple, she started to eat.  Just in case this might help.

DD preferred the wide nipples, with the slowest flow.  We ended up using playtex drop-ins.

But, it may not even be a bottle/nipple preference thing, it may just be a breast/bottle preference and he may end up reverse cycling and only snack while you're away and then eat a ton when you're home.  You'll just have to keep experimenting to figure out his preferences then go with it. :)

  • Thanks, ladies. :)

I do think that he has a tougher time with the rounder, bigger nipples. He did awful with Soothies and we ultimately had to get him the Avent ones that are flatter so he would take them.

I may try Tommee Tippee or something that has a smaller nipple that mimics the breast. I'm finding that he develops a poor suck on the breast after feeding from the bottle. But I'm also counting on that reverse cycling thing. He loves the boob. :)
