Transitioning to WCM

My doctor told me that we could start the transition slowly (starting out with other dairy products like cheese, yogurt, etc) to WCM at Pumpkin's 9 month check.

So my question is, how?  Do you mix it with the formula (we're FF - about 22 oz per day)?  Do I give one bottle straight WCM when it comes to that point?  Would love recommendations/suggestions.

Pumpkin did not do well on my breastmilk.  I did not cut out dairy as that was a step I did not feel I would be successful at.  We switched to FF at that point (4 months).  I'm a little worried about his reaction to WCM.

Re: Transitioning to WCM

  • A has been eating dairy since about 7 months and it doesn't seem to be a problem at all. I have not talked to our doctor about it yet, but I would also just start with yoghurt and cheese, and then, if that goes well, I would start giving him milk every now and then - as in letting have a sip here and there. Maybe with his cereal?

If none of that causes any problems, you could give him a bottle. But then, I keep hearing they should stay on bm/formula until at least a year old.

    Sorry that isn't much help.....

  • I would not put it in a bottle, but in a sippy or a cup. The goal is to have a baby weaned from a bottle by a year, so if you are doing part formula and part WCM, I would keep giving formula in a bottle and the WCM in a cup. Then you can slowly phase out the bottles of formula.

  • My pedi recommended mixing the formula and cow's milk for a while, but said it was only because some babies dislike the flavor at first. He basically said that she could start drinking it whenever we're ready, but that the full transition should be ~1 year.

  • Thanks ladies.  We've given him some cheese, and he LOVES it.  I'll add in some yogurt here soon.

Good thought on not putting milk in the bottle.  He actually never really did take to a sippy cup, but is doing a straw cup quite well.  He might be able to get a sippy now that he has the concept of sucking to get liquid.

This is what our pedi said as well.  SILs fiance, who's a pedi, said he tells his patients to mix the milk with water.

  • My pedi was quite clear about not starting the transition until she had reached her 1st birthday I know the advice varies based on pedi and whether or not your baby is BF or FF.
