Preemies

"Will she be normal?"

That's what my 24 year old SIL asked me this morning and I can't get it out of my mind.  Lila was born at 31 weeks, fortunately has had no IVH,apnea or brady episodes but it is a concern of all parents of preemies. I just wish people would think before they speak and make a bee line to our greatest fears.

  • this is so hard.  Im so sorry that you had to hear that from your SIL.   I try to always remember that most people that say stupid or insensitive things mean well and love my daughter.

The upside is I feel like we never feel caught in the "keeping up with the jones'" among friends that have babies around the same age and everyone seems genuinely excited for us when our LO hits milestones no matter her age.

  • I hate when people are so insensitive. I got asked at a bbq recently why my daughter was so small and is there something wrong with her. I almost said: Is there something wrong with you because you have no mute button on your mouth and say stupid sh*t. Instead I said no she was a preemie and a peanut, she's perfectly healthy and the doctor is happy with her progress. People are assh8les.

  • That was not a nice comment for her to make. I am sorry you had to hear that. People do not think sometimes. Sometimes they are just very clueless since they haven't been through it.

  • my step MIL said the same thing to my DH and I the other day. It completely shocked me. My DH was a preemie himself and he had a lot more complications than our LO and he is fine. So I don't get how she could be so insensitive.

I am sorry your SIL put you in that position. On another note glad to hear you haven't had a lot of issues with your LO. ^_^

  • It's amazing how insensitive some people are. Normally I'd ignore it, but given that it's your SIL I think I'd try to explain how you know she is concerned, but that she is your perfect little girl no matter what and you'd appreciate it if people just love and accept her for exactly who she is, as nobody, preemie or not, knows what the future holds.
