Baby Names

Poppy

Since DH and I found out I was pregnant we have started calling our growing baby Poppy because at the time we found out, we saw that the baby was the size of a poppy seed.  Slowly it has started growing on me and I am wondering if maybe we will use it for the name if this baby ends up being a girl (and I am convinced it will be).  What do you think of the name?

Re: Poppy

  • I like it as a mn but it's a little cutesy for me for a first name- but I know a lot of ladies on here do like it.

  • I think it could be a cute nickname, but I'm not sure how I feel about it as a formal name.

  • Great for a nickname/pet name, but I wouldn't use it as a formal name.  Kind of reminds me of the field of poppies from Wizard of Oz, LOL.  But, again, very fitting for an at-home nickname.

  • I think you could use Poppy as a nn for Penelope

  • I don't like it as a first name at all. As a nn is fine, but who would take an adult named Poppy seriously?

  • I have a 4 year old cousin whose name is Poppy. NMS but most people think it's cute on her.

Love Poppy but feel it's more of a nn for Penelope.

  • It's cute sounding, albeit a little juvenile.  I don't like the color orange though so in general I'm not a fan of poppies/Poppy.

If nothing else, I think it would make a sweet pet name for her if you decide upon another name.

  • As a formal name it sounds cutesy-pretentious. Not bad as a NN or maybe even a middle name.

  • Maybe as a NN. This is what my LO calls his grandpa so I would always have that association with it.
  • I think it's cute :) You could always name her Penelope and call her Poppy.

  • I love Poppy but DH wont let me use it.  It's very classic British sounding to me and goes well with you DS's name (my favorite boy's name :)
  • I like it as a nickname for Penelope.

  • Its a guilty pleasure of mine but I doubt I would ever consider it seriously. Seems like a tough name to go older with. Very cute though :)

  • I love Poppy! I would just use as is as I'm not the biggest Penelope fan, but it works either way.

  • I wouldn't be able to take an adult named this seriously.  I prefer it as a nn, even a nn that has nothing to do with the first name.

  • We named our daughter Penelope with the full intention of calling her Poppy all the time.  Then someone asked me if I was calling her Papi - like father in Spanish and it completely ruined the name for me.  I am thankful we had Penelope to fall back on because I really don't like the name anymore.
  • I really like it!  I don't think it's any different than a girl named Katie or Molly or Annie.  Those were once "little girl" nicknames, but are now accepted as first names for girls and grown women.

  • I like it as a NN for Penelope. It's too young for an adult IMO
  • Thanks- it is always helpful to hear a someone's real experience with the name.  But I can also see that there are mixed opinions wit the main reservation being the name is too young.  But I'm not sure that is really a big deal to me to have a name that keeps you forever young :)

And I also appreciate all the background and history with it- now it makes total sense- I guess I am just a huge sucker for British names!

This, more or less. It's better as a nn.

  • I know I'm in the minority here, but I personally don't like it at all.  My SIL did the same as you (started calling her daughter Poppy before they knew her sex) and it stuck.  They ended up named her Peyton, but call her Poppy more often than not.  I'm not sure if it's because I don't really care for my SIL, or if it's the fact that I can't get past the grandpa/character on Seinfeld reference, but I just can't get on board with it even as a nickname.  JMO.
