C-sections

Eating after your C/S?

I am scheduled for a c-section in a few weeks and read somewhere about how they will only give you clear foods and liquids afterwards...how long until they will let me eat that Turkey sandwich I have been dreaming of? Do I have to wait for a certain amount of hours? Or is it until after I pass gas? Pee? Poop? TIA!

I had my c-section at night(DS was born at 9:25 PM).   I had clear liquids for breafast the next day.    The nurse brought me the tray...apple juice, tea, lemon ice, and broth.    I was allowed to order anything for lunch a couple hours later.

  • I was able to drink clear liquids until I passed gas.  I've had 2 c/s and after the last one the nurse offered me a gas x to speed the passing gas process up.  I had my c/s in the morning and was eating by lunch time.  It prob did speed the process up and I will be asking for a gas x with my next c/s.

  • My c-s was at 9:30am and I had a liquid lunch around 2:00.  I had broth, jello and cranberry juice.  I ate dinner that night around 7 and had a grilled cheese.  You probably won't pass gas for a few hours and won't poop for several days.  And likely you'll still be hooked up to a catheter for about 24 hours... which is a good thing b/c you won't have to worry about peeing.  It was the first time I didn't have to get out of bed in the middle of the night for a loooong time!

  • The reasoning is probably b/c of what happened to me.  Grace was born at 7:45am (spinal not epi).  I was back in my room and was able to order from the breakfast menu so it must have been before 11am.  I was hungry, felt great, but still vomitted my breakfast.  Felt fine 5 minutes later.  Lunch came around.  Same thing happened.  Felt fine but still vomitted.  I wasn't able to keep anything down till dinner even though I never felt sick.  I'm delivering at a different hospital this time and later in the morning so I'm thinking no one is going to feed me till dinner.  No sure what the "rule" is.  I asked, and they gave it to me.

It was nearly 36 hours for me. My csection was at 4pm. The day of all I had was ice chips and the following day all liquids/clears (sprite, jello, broth). Finally the next day I had solids. It was an emergency csection so had I known prior I would have had a great "last meal" but I was fully intending on eating right after birth. FWIW, it went by quick and I was so consumed with my babe that I never even really felt like I needed to eat.

This, and you have to pass gas.  It kind of sucks, but you'll get through it!

  • I had my 1st c/s at 11:30am, and had a milkshake a few hours after.  That night I was allowed solids, they just wanted to wait until they could hear gas noises in my stomach.

2nd c/s was at 7:30am, same deal, waited for gas noises (if I remember right they actually wanted me to pass gas this time) and I was allowed solids for dinner.  Best Potbelly's sub of my liiiiiiife.  ;)

  • I didn't have any restrictions what-so-ever. The boys were out at 10:14 and 10:15. I ate lunch at 1:00PM-turkey wrap. I remember very clearly the time because I was STARVING (it was a scheduled C and I had been fasting since 8PM the night before).

  • I had DS at 5 a.m. I was on a liquid diet that day (broths and jello) but had no restrictions the next morning.

I snuck a granola bar over night, though :)

  • My c/s was at 8:30am - my first meal of the day was lunch, and it was only clear liquids.  Dinner was still liquids, but had more substance (creamy soup instead of broth, for example).  Since I tolerated both of those meals fine, without getting sick, I was allowed to order off the regular menu starting at breakfast the next morning.  I think there's a time frame from the time your spinal is administered that they try to hit, they want to make sure you're not going to end up sick/vomiting right after abdominal surgery.

  • I had my c/s at night and then for bfast I ate eggs and plain toast. I wasn't put on any restrictions. My dr did say that restrictions are put in place for nausea but I didn't have any.

  • mine was the worst!!  I was induced at 8am and was not allowed to eat after midnight the night before.  Had c/section at midnight that evening.  Got my clear liquid meal about noon the next day.  I was DYING for real food and talked the nurse into giving me a sandwich if I did ok with the liquids.....so that was about 36 hours for me:(

  • I was in recovery room after my c-section at around 415pm, and by breakfast the next day they let me eat real food. I didn't eat much just a few bites, but hey it was real food.

  • I had my LO on a Thursday morning.  That day I was on a clear liquid diet.  I was cleared the next day to eat other foods but I stuck to plain, light things just in case I would feel sick.  By the 3rd day I was eating whatever I wanted and it all went down fine.  It was Cinco de Mayo and my H brought me mexican food!

  • I was able to eat as soon as I was ready after my c/s.  Of course I wasn't thinking of food at first while I was meeting my babies, but they never gave me any restrictions.
  • I went from ice chips, sips of water, clear liquids (jello and juice), to normal frood all within the first day.  Once you start passing gas, it's normally okay to slowly begin eating regular food again.  Getting yourself up and out of bed frequently early on will help get your bowels up and going again quicker.

  • I had to pass gas first and it took almost three days. Had CS Wed morning at 7:30 and couldn't eat until Friday afternoon.  I was so miserable from hunger. My DD was born the day before Thanksgiving and I was so sad that I couldn't eat the Thanksgiving plates our friends were so nice to bring us up to the hospital. My husband felt bad eating it in front of me so he left the room with it, haha. I had sooooooo much jello and chicken broth because I was starving! If I have to do a RCS this time I'm lying about passing the gas test so I can eat!

  • I was so sick from the anesthesia that I could keep anything down for the entire first day.  It was probably not until late the second day that I even attempted solid food.

I had him just before 11pm and had a Dr Pepper at 2am... before the nurse remembered to tell me nothing bubbly because it could give me bad gas pain. I ate a normal hospital breakfast a few hours later. I have a friend in another state who was told NOTHING for 24 hours.

  • I had DD at 3:30pm and was able to have grape juice and crackers as soon as I was in my room.
  • I'm gonna agree with PPs suggestions..... and also chime in that as long as you get it from a reputable deli, you can have that turkey sub now. It's not gonna hurt baby-- there are many more infections sustained through contaminated fruits/veggies
