Pumping

I have a one week old.  He usually nurses every 3-4 hours.  Today i fed him and then pumped again a little before I nursed him.  He nursed the regular amount of time. However he was fussy right after and wanted to nurse again an hour later. Since I pumped, did he not get much when I fed him??

Re: Pumping

  • Hm, possibly - hard to tell at that age, he could be fussy for a number of reasons, but if you pumped everything out, then he wanted to eat within an you it's likely you didnt have enough milk the second time.

I didn't start pumping to build supply until the 3rd week - I was actually engorged so I avoided pumping because I didn't want to stimulate even more!!

That might be the case... or he could have just been really gassy. I always pump after I feed. Then you know that your LO got all they needed and you can still build up a stash!

  • Yes. Always pump AFTER you feed LO.

  • I had to pump the first week because DD was in the hospital.  I now have oversupply, and it sucks.

I would hold off on the pumping until breastfeeding is well established, and then only pump when you need to.  At this point, pumping isn't necessary.

My DD wasn't on the hospital but I needed to pump because of her prematurity. Oversupply sucks and is making DD colicky and miserable. Seriously domt pump the first month if you can avoid it.
