December 2010 Moms

This is really weird (hysterical diaper changes)

And I don't like it.

Since last night, G has been hysterical during diaper changes.  Like full on sweating, screaming, crying mess.  Like when he goes to the doctor. The minute I try and take his shorts off, it's on.  He also stiffens up like a board.  I don't know what's going on.  He's never been bothered by changes before. Never struggled.  Nothing!

What's happening!  Any ideas?  I was almost in tears after his last change.

FWIW he doesn't have any diaper rash or anything uncomfortable looking.  He's been pooping and peeing as normal.  He has a cold but that's it.

 Eta: typo

  • Hmm diaper rash would have been my first thought...that is the only time mine freak out during diaper changes. Who else besides you do the changes, has anyone else had him freak out for them?...or is it a special Momma treat LOL. HUGS, that can't be fun.

  • Is he constipated?  I don't really have any other ideas of what it could be.  Sorry Cheekers, that sounds awful.  Sad
  • Is he busy doing something when you go to change him? Maybe he doesn't want to be bothered.

  • John has started getting grouchy for changes and all I can think is that he just doesn't want to be interrupted.  Obviously a one year old has much better things to do than to lay still to have his diaper changed!

I really don't know what would make him so bad, though!  I would have guessed diaper rash, since that was the only time J was as bad as you described.  I'm sorry I'm not any help.  I feel for you Sad

  • Hopefully it's just a weird phase.  I really don't like it!

  • All I can think of is maybe something bothered him during a recent diaper change??  I know I read recently that at this age their memories start to get much better and fears (usually irrational and short lived) start to emerge.

I know my son had something so minor happened going down the slide and for weeks was terrified.

I'd just reassure him it's fine.  I'm sure it is just one of those "this to shall pass!"

  • L did this for a little while (like, 3 days), and then it stopped just as suddenly as it had started.  He didn't have any diaper rash or anything weird going on either.  Hopefully it'll just be a phase for you too!!!

  • This is a little bit out there, but if he has a cold do you think it's possible he may have an ear infection?  Last time L had an ear infection she freaked anytime I would lay her down.  She typically fights diaper changes, too, but not to the point of sweating and hysterics.

I hadn't thought about it until AFanch posted this but C used to go nuts during diaper changes when he had all of his ear infections too.

I suppose it's possible? He has a normal ped appt on Tuesday and I will have then check then.  If he continues like this I'll take him in  sooner.

Ive been wracking my brain to think if something like this could have happened.  He was with a sitter yesterday and maybe he got freaked out by something.  I sure hope he feels reassured soon.

  • My nephew does this at every diaper change, probably for the last 4 or 5 months...it is very disturbing for my BIL and SIL.  They started to change him standing up with those pull-up diapers that aren't pull ups....are the cruisers or something? and he has been a lot better.

  • I think it was last month when Griff started hating diaper changes. At first he refused to lie down on his change table and then he started to refuse to lie down at all (like on the floor or bed).  We even tried to give him toys or snacks to get him to stay lying down but it only works half thd time.  We had to learn to change his disper while he stood up because it was becoming such a struggle and Griff looked so stressed out too.

Its gotten a little better now.  I'd say 75% of the time he'll lie down on the floor for diaper changes and if not, then I just change him while he stands.  I guess I'm just picking my battles.  I'm hoping this phase is almost over.  GL!

This is usually the issue with my DS. He hates having to stop what he's doing and lie still while we change him. I can usually get him to lighten up by singing to him or making silly faces.

GL! I hope things get better soon!

B's been the same way recently.  While we are dealing with a nasty yeast infection, I think it's because he doesn't want to stop playing, like desertlady and grayghost said.

Like you said, it sucks.  I hope all the babies grow out of this phase soon.

  • I was also going to guess that it's an ear infection. DS protests his diaper changes, but not to the extreme you're describing.  He freaks when I pick him up, when he's on the table, he's trying to twist around & sit up, but he's not scared or stressed. I know he just is pissed I interrupted him!

He does get scared on public restroom changing tables, where he'll panic & cry - those Koala Kare fold out tables- but hey, they skeeve me out, too, so I don't blame him, lol.
