Bizarre Email

I got this email today, subject "Adoption" and I was quite shocked.  Im assuming its a joke or fraud or scam, but felt I needed to share its ridiculousness with everyone!

 

" My name is Howard Duncan and I know a single birth mother, her pregnancy was unplanned and now she have a baby girl, she is just 3 days old. She feel her baby would be best with a loving, kind, and accepting adoptive family, couple or single parent of any race. During her pregnancy she had used no drugs, cigarette or alcohol. She is still in the hospital because she has a lung disease. If any one is interested please kindly contact me by email howard155d@aim.com her name is Sarah and I am her Attorney."

 

Someone told me I should report this but I have no idea who I would report it to!

A Google search of "Howard Duncan attorney" mostly gives results of a bankruptcy lawyer in Nebraska.  Quite an odd e-mail address for a lawyer conducting business.  Were you the only one who got the e-mail?

That is odd, but like you I'm not sure who you'd report to?

I would research if such an attorney exists near you. Just for curiosity and to see if it's even remotely legit. Not that I'd answer it or get my hopes up, though.

Maybe the National Council for Adoption and the American Bar Association?

I'd have a hard time not writing a strongly worded email back on preying on people who are just trying to grow their family. Gets my feathers alllll kiiiinds of ruffled. Ugh!

I Googled the e-mail address and found that someone else (or maybe your Tumblr account?) received the same e-mail.

I'll bet if you responded, they'd request that you send expenses to cover their fees and BM fees.  I don't know who you'd report a scam like that to though.

What kind of lawyer would use an AIM email address?  AIM is something my nephews used before they turned 13.

My husband is an attorney and I can tell you that this is most likely a scam.  There is no way any legal professional would send such a poorly written message (and such a short one!).

Perhaps try calling your local police station and ask who you can report this to. Sounds like a horrible scam. =(

Seriously though, I'd take the old adage of "if it sounds too good to be true..."

I actually went ahead and emailed that attorney to tell him that someone is posing as him. He emailed me back in 30 minutes horrified by the "scam" and also emailed that email address above with some strong words.

OMG I've gotten that email too!!!  I wanted to email him back and say "I highly doubt an actual lawyer would be soliciting like this.  Nor would an actual lawyer have so many errors in his solicitation.  Nor would an actual lawyer use Comic Sans.  You're disgusting."
